Dear Barrett Families,
I believe the topic of student safety can never be mentioned too many times. Safety is our number one priority at Barrett. This is a topic that is addressed daily in the media as well as in our community. For students at Barrett, safety starts on the way to school and does not end until students reach home in the afternoon.
Parents, please follow the safety standards listed below when dropping your students off in the morning and picking your students up at the end of the day.
· Drive into the parking lot to drop off/pick-up your students. Another option is to drop off your student at the crosswalk.
· DO NOT drop off in the middle of the street or by the school parking lot exit. This unsafe practice is a common occurrence in the morning and endangers student safety.
· DO NOT make U-turns on Barrett Road or Rampart Road. This dangerous practice is still occurring daily.
· DO NOT park or drop off students in the bike lane in front of the school. CHP will ticket for this offense. We thank our parents who have stopped parking in the bike lane.
· Have your student wear a helmet when riding a bike to and from school. This is a state-law requirement.
Students, safety is in numbers. Whenever possible, walk in a group, not alone. Please follow the personal safety rules below:
· If you are approached or followed, run to a business or house and call 911.
· Do not fall victim to ploys used by abductors in an attempt to lure you to their car, such as asking for directions or other questions such as “Did you see my dog running loose?”
· Never approach a car; you could easily be pulled inside.
· Do not accept an offer from a stranger to help you (Example: offering to give you a ride or to carry a heavy backpack for you).
· If possible, write down or take a picture of the car’s license plate number if you are approached in a suspicious manner.
· Have a cell phone out and dial a family member or pretend to dial if you are approached by a stranger. It is a good idea to have an emergency number programmed into your cell phone.
Please help us keep Barrett students safe!
Sincerely,
Lisa Herstrom-Smith
