A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As we enter the second quarter of instruction our focus is on your student’s academic achievement.  Quarter one serves as a “wake up call” for many of our students who are not completing class and homework assignments or preparing for tests.  Please take time to sit down with your student to discuss strategies and form an action plan for your student’s success.  Through our website at www.sanjuan.edu students and parents may access class/homework assignments as well as email a teacher to address concerns or questions.  In addition, parents may log on to our new student information system, Zangle, and see their student’s current grades.  Please contact our school secretary at cindy.kelleher@sanjan.edu  if you do not have a PIN and password for Zangle.

To help nurture student academic success, we have two after-school study halls.  Mrs. Folta in room P-1 offers an all-subject study hall for one hour daily, and Mrs. Danzinger in room 34 offers math study hall Monday – Wednesday, also for an hour after school.  Both can be attended on a drop-in basis, and students may leave early if need be.  Neither offer tutoring, per se, but several Del Campo students are available for hire as tutors in many subjects; see below in this newsletter for information.

We encourage all parents to stay in close contact with their student’s teachers and to regularly check their student’s daily planner, teachers’ websites and Zangle.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact our school counselors, Laurie Faniani and Celina Adams, who can be reached by calling the school office at 971-7842, extension 3, or by emailing them at lfaniani@sanjuan.edu or celina.adams@sanjuan.edu.  We are excited about the school year and are working to help all Barrett students to be successful in school.

On a happy note, congratulations to the 418 Barrett students who enjoyed a barbeque lunch on November 2 to celebrate their success at earning a 3.0 or higher GPA with no unsatisfactory marks in citizenship.  We are so proud that almost half of our student population is earning a B or better for the first quarter of the school year.  In addition, 70 of our students had no first quarter/first period tardies or absences! These students may have a sticker added to their ID cards (in the office) that will allow them to go to the front of the lunch lines for the rest of this quarter.

Open Enrollment for next year’s students is now in progress; you’ll find information further on in this newsletter.

Sincerely,

Lisa Herstrom-Smith

“THIS IS IT”

If you are a Michael Jackson fan, you must go Nov. 20 to see the Dance Performance of “This Is It” by Barrett’s performing arts students.  The production covers a timeline of Michael’s life and music. (Even if you’re not a fan, go—it’s an amazing production!) Students and staff were delighted with the treat of seeing the performance by over 150 of our very talented first-quarter drama students.  Special thanks to Deborah Ethington, performing arts teacher and performance mastermind, and Don Wright, art teacher, for set designs.

BOOK FAIR

The library and the PTA will host the Scholastic Book Fair from Tuesday, Dec. 1 through Friday, Dec. 4 during school hours.  We will accept credit cards and checks made out to Barrett PTA.  Families are welcome to visit after school until 3 pm, and 2 pm on Thursday.    Barrett’s English classes are scheduled to visit the library during the fair.   This will be the perfect time to get some early holiday shopping done, too.

Volunteers needed-- if you can help out for a few hours, please email kohlson@sanjuan.edu with your name, phone number, and availability.

SJUSD PARENT PORTAL

SJUSD Parent Portal provides parents and families with easy and timely access to student information.

·         You can access the SJUSD Parent Portal in one of two ways: If you have a valid email address on file and are listed as the mother, father, or guardian for your student(s) without any directory restriction, you should receive an email containing instructions on how to access the Parent Portal, including PIN and Password.

  • If you are listed as the mother, father, or guardian for your student(s) and do not have any directory restriction, but have not received an email, please visit your school site or the Technology Services HelpDesk, which is located at 5133 Engle Road, Carmichael, CA 95608 for assistance. In order to protect student confidential information in accordance with Federal and State regulations, parents must provide student name, birth date, and school of enrollment, and present a valid ID in person.

PRINCIPAL’S COFFEE WITH PARENTS FEBRUARY 2 – 8:30 AM

Our “Principal’s Coffee Meet/Greet” is a great opportunity to discuss our school/district expectations as well as what is new or ongoing at Barrett, student classes/ schedules and the opportunity to answer a variety of questions from parents.  Please mark your calendar for our third Principal’s Coffee on February 2, 2010, at 8:30 am in the staff  room.

LOCK UP VALUABLES

Students should be locking up their valuables during P.E. as teachers cannot guarantee the safety of a student’s valuables during class.  A lock is cheap to buy but cell phones, iPods, cameras, etc. are expensive to replace.  Locks can be purchased for $5.00 from the P.E. teacher.

SCHOOL RULES REMINDER

·         We’re please to note that skateboards have NOT been showing up at school lately since they are not permitted on campus – this is a District rule.

·         Gum chewing is forbidden during school hours.

·         To avoid dress code violations, please read the rules listed in your Planner and the notices sent home regarding appropriate dress for school.  This includes any holes or tears in shirts and/or pants.

CLUB LIVE!

CLUB LIVE:  A fun after-school club that allows students to organize and run projects to help the school and the community.  The purpose of this club is to show students that they can have fun without using alcohol or drugs. We meet Wednesdays after school at 2:30.

Our first event was an After-School Movie on October 22, and we had a huge turnout.  Then on November 18 we made holiday cards and ornaments for the elderly in our community.

Our next movie presentation, Elf,  will be on December 17, 1:30 - 3:30 pm.; popcorn and a beverage are included. We request a $2 donation to cover our expenses.  (All students who attend the movie are expected to stay through the end.)

AVID CLASSES

Barnes & Noble Fundraiser - Barrett's AVID classes are involved in a fundraiser at the Birdcage Barnes and Noble.  When someone uses a voucher or mentions Barrett School and makes a purchase from Friday, December 11 through Monday, December 14 Barrett's AVID will receive a portion of the profit.  The voucher will be passed out to all Barrett students the week prior to the fundraiser and will also be available on the Barrett website. AVID students will be sharing original stories and poetry as well as wrapping gifts for donations from 4PM-11PM on Friday, December 11 at the store.  Please help out this great cause by buying books at the Birdcage Barnes and Noble. Keep in mind, books, calendars, CD's and DVD's make great holiday and birthday gifts!

BARRETT BATTALION NEWS

We would like to thank CSUS fraternities for their donations to the Barrett Battalion last month, and the Jordan Haines family for their very generous donations of AT&T Calling cards-- that was beyond the call of duty!  We also thank all the students and their families for making the first donation a success; we sent 14 boxes of supplies to Sgt. Phillip Arnold of the National Guard!

Our next collection has started; it will end on January 5 and be shipped to Commander Jeff Danzinger of the United States Navy, currently serving attached to NATO Headquarters.  Our service men and women have asked specifically for:  Chapstick, unscented baby wipes, Clorox wipes, all flavors of Betty Crocker Warm Delights, beef jerky, trail mix, mixed nuts, goldfish crackers and any other tasty snacks you can think of.  Condiments are welcomed  too, to add some zip to meals.  Thank you to all the families who are constantly supporting these brave men and women!  B. Danzinger

If you are not sure of an item’s suitability, please email Mrs. Danzinger at bdanzinger@sanjuan.edu to check.

The Barrett Battalion is collecting empty CA CASH REFUND-marked aluminum cans and plastic bottles to help offset the cost of shipment of the packages.  If you have any recyclable plastic bottles and cans at home and wish to donate them to our cause, please bring in or send them to school with your child.  All donations need to go to room 34, or may be dropped off at the office.

BOX TOPS for EDUCATION

Mrs. Honegger in room 12 is collecting Box Tops for Education, which can be found on many products probably in your household.  If your student turns in ten box tops at a time he/she will get a Lunch Fast Pass.  Box tops may be turned in to the office in an envelope with your student’s name on the front of the envelope.

DONATION REQUESTS

We would sincerely appreciate donations of the following items for the office:

·         Bandages – ¾” x 3”

·         Large size bandages (2 x 4)

·         Snack-size zip-top plastic bags for ice

·         Kleenex

·         Latex gloves

·         Conforming- stretch gauze rolls

·         Hand sanitizer

COUNSELING OFFICE

We are very pleased to welcome a new counselor this year at Barrett.  In addition to our full-time counselor, Mrs. Laurie Faniani, Ms. Celina Adams is here on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Counseling services are available to all students attending Barrett, regarding any issues that may be impeding their academic success.  Students may meet with a counselor by contacting her personally or by referral.  Mrs. Faniani and Ms. Adams are also here to coordinate parent conferences, refer families to outside community resources, and contact students who may need extra academic support and intervention.

Mrs. Faniani or Ms. Adams can be reached by calling the school office at 971-7842, extension 3, or by emailing them at lfaniani@sanjuan.edu or celina.adams@sanjuan.edu.

VERY DIFFERENT DONATION REQUEST

YARN—WE NEED YARN!  Clean out that stash you haven’t used in a while, or shop those great sales!  We are collecting yarn, in any style and size and amount, to donate to a local group of seniors who use it to make blankets and hats for the needy or homeless and for cancer patients with chilly heads resulting from chemotherapy-induced hair loss.  It’s a good deed for a great cause—you’ll literally be helping distribute “warm fuzzies” !  Take the yarn to the box in the library marked “yarn” or turn in at the office.  We’d like to collect as much as we can (oodles!) by December 18, the last day of school this year.

DEL CAMPO TUTORS AVAILABLE

Del Campo High School has available students who can tutor in math, history, sciences, English, German and Spanish.  Our students can work with the tutors here on the Barrett campus after school or at the student’s home.  A list of Del Campo tutors is available in the office.
