California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is California's system of state assessments comprising of computerized assessments for English Language Arts, math, and science taken at the end of the school year.

CAASPP's primary purpose is to assist teachers, administrators, students, and parents by promoting high-quality teaching and learning through assessments aligned to the rigor of the Common Core State Standards. It consists of the following assessments:

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)

  • English Language Arts - All students in grades: 3-8 and 11. Exceptions: Students participating in the CAA, and E.L. who are in their first 12 months of attending school in the USA.

  • Mathematics - All students in grades 3-8 and 11. Exception: Students participating in the CAA

  • California Alternate Assessment (CAA) in grades: 3-8 and 11 with the most significant cognitive disabilities, whose active individual educational program (IEP) designates the use of an alternate assessment.

Science 

  • California Science Test (CAST)- All students in grades: 5 and 8 and once in grades: 10, 11, or 12

  • California Alternate Assessment for Science (CAAS) for students in grades: 5 and 8, and once in grades: 10, 11, or 12 with the most significant cognitive disabilities, whose active individual educational program (IEP) designates the use of an alternate assessment.
