Cambridge Heights » About Our School »

I’d like to welcome you to the Cambridge Heights Open School website.  We are an alternative school offering an enriched learning environment for Kindergarten to sixth grade students.  In our “open” building our students experience standards based instruction in a climate that values individual differences and a collaborative learning community.  We are proud of the educational program we provide our students and their families.  As a learning community we are involved in a continuous cycle of reflection and refinement of our program.

On June 5, 2009 we completed another successful school year.  The year had many highlights and left us energized to return on August 24 for another year of growth and learning.  During the past year we strengthened our Accelerated Reading Program.  This first to sixth grade reading incentive program encourages continuous reading practice and rewards students for achieving their reading goals.  Our students read 1,875 more books this year than the prior year!  With the support of our PFC we hope to continue this program that has opened the world of literature to so many of our students.  During the 2008/2009 school year we also implemented a new science program in all grades. Kindergartens through 5th grade were inspired and intrigued by the FOSS curriculum and its many exciting investigations and experiments.  Students in sixth grade were captivated by the latest Glencoe science materials which have a strong technology component.  This science curriculum prepares our sixth grade students for the middle school science experience.  Another exciting new program, Book and Barks, was dedicated to improving the reading skills of our students by using therapy dogs and their handlers as literacy mentors.  This monthly program, staffed by the Delta Society volunteers and their dogs and organized by teacher Jennie Hann, gave many of our readers the opportunity to read aloud in a relaxing setting.  The school year was full of much, much more. Please review our past school bulletins, the Cougar News, to learn more about the exciting learning occurring at Cambridge Heights every day.

I encourage visitors to explore our website to glean the essence of our work with students and their families.  To our families, I hope this website will enhance our communication, encourage your continued involvement and be a valuable tool throughout the year.  Together we…cultivate a community of learners.
