Churchill's 4 R's Rigor, Relationships, Relevancy and Results *Established Fall 2007
Rigor - Churchill is committed to creating and maintaining an academic environment that develops the capacity of ALL students.
IB: ALL students will be exposed to content that is complex, ambiguous, provocative and personally or emotionally challenging.
SJUSD SP #1: Implementing effective instructional strategies and utilizing assessment data to engage students to increase achievement on state standards, and 21st century skills.
• International Baccalaureate (IB) – Program designed to challenge our high-achieving students o By spring of 2009 our goal is to create one hundred (100) IB new Unit Plans grades 6-8. (150+ units as of Sept 2009) o ALL staff have attended IB Trainings. 100% attended trainings in 2008-2009. • Accelerated classes (Ambassador Program) for those students who do not qualify for IB but nonetheless need an accelerated program (similar to HA at other sites) • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) – Program designed to assist identified students in becoming better students with a very specific goal of attending college. o 40% of staff has attended AVID Trainings. Over 30% attended 2007-2008 • Traditional academic program (Diplomat Program) that is standards-based and represents effective instructional teaching strategies. • All Churchill curriculum is Standards-Based (Adopted by the State of CA and SJUSD) • Prepping ALL students for high school A-G Requirements and the MS to HS transition. • All Departments are developing common and routine pacing, benchmarks and assessments. • Accelerated Reader (AR) program on campus. • Churchill & Churchill/MLHS Site Teams established to improve vertical articulation (2007) • Schoolwide writing philosophy o Implementing Step Up To Writing model schoolwide for ALL assigned writing. (2008)
Relationships - Churchill is committed to creating and maintaining a positive and welcoming environment for all students, staff, parents and community members.
IB: We expect ALL students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
SJUSD SP #2: Expand human, community, and financial resources and ensure they are used most effectively to achieve our mission and objectives.
SJUSD SP #3: Ensure effective two-way communication that is honest, transparent, and timely to build trusting relationships and create a unified collaborative learning community.
SJUSD SP #6: Identify, model, and integrate positive character traits, as well as develop means for assessments, to help our students become contributing, responsible, and caring members of a diverse community.
SJUSD SP #7: Actively engage families as valued partners in the education process.
• 100% of the staff has attended PBS (Positive Behavior Support) trainings in the last year • Consistent parental contact from teachers and administration via e-mail and phone. • On-line web-based grading program and email notification • High visibility on campus by staff and administration • “Meet and Greet” – all staff committed to greeting students each period each day. • “Shoe”-B-Q’s – to recognize and honor students exhibiting various positive attributes • “A”-“B”-Q’s - to recognize all students earning a 3.0 gpa on quarterly Report Cards • “Proficiency Pops” - recognize all students scoring Proficient or improving their results by at least 10% since the previous SJUSD Benchmark Test. • Online calendar for “IB Tests and Major Assignments” to assist students and families • Staff committed to recognizing and rewarding kids that are doing the right things daily • Partnership with Mission Parks and Recreation and SJUSD for our after-school sports program (Volleyball, Flag Football, Boys and Girls Basketball, Wrestling, Track) • Be Bold Program (Anti-Bullying) • 1.2 Counselors available to students • EVERY 7th grade student meets with our counselors to discuss academic goals/future • Parents called every time a student is involved in a significant discipline related issue • Parents called every time a student is absent for two or more periods any day. • Student Agendas – Allowing for easy communication between teachers and parents • Staff utilize teacher websites to communicate with parents and students • Bridges – After-school program offering academic assistance, enrichment activities, recreation, team building activities and nutritional snacks • Churchill Administration is involved with the local business community and local service organizations. Churchill is a member of the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce • Churchill Website is student centered, user-friendly and up-to-date • Various lunchtime activities offered to all students (Intramural sports, clubs, activities, etc) • Very active Churchill PTO and Churchill IB Parent Booster Club • BTV daily student news program is posted on-line for parents to access at their convenience • Development of a PAW (Parents Are Welcome at Churchill) area adjacent to Main Office. o While you wait for your student you can access their grades, send a teacher an e-mail, browse our website, or even access your own e-mail accounts if needed (Fall 2009)
Relevancy - Churchill is committed to creating and maintaining an academic program that is timely and relevant.
IB: Our goal is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
SJUSD SP #4: Design and implement a system that creates challenging personal educational plans at each grade level in collaboration with students, family and staff.
SJUSD SP #5: Integrate relevant technology into teaching, learning and system operations.
• Elective offerings are in line with the interests and needs of 21st Century students o GenYes, Electronics, Computers, On-line Newspaper, Yearbook, , Art, Drama, Band, Woodshop, Chinese, Japanese, French and Spanish • Wireless 21st Century educational setting schoolwide. Over 130 laptops for student use • Three mobile wireless laptop labs, iPod lab, and two stationary computer labs on campus • Library lab is wireless and laptop based • Tardy Policy and Dress Code that reflects social/work norms and expectations (Fall 2008) • Community Service component to our IB program • On-line assignments, blogging, and student podcasts
Results - Churchill is committed to measurable educational improvements.
• Churchill is one of four (4) secondary schools in SJUSD that has an Academic Performance Indicator (API) over the state’s goal for all schools of 800 • Churchill has the 2nd highest middle school Academic Performance Indicator (API) in SJUSD • When compared to ALL middle schools in the state Churchill ranks a 9 out of 10 in measurable academic results (CDE data 2006, 2007, 2008) • When compared to similar schools in the state (size, demographics) Churchill ranks a 9 out of 10 in measurable academic results (CDE Data 2006, 2007, 2008) • IB Expansion – for the first time in 14 years the SJUSD voted to allow an expansion of the program by thirty-three (33) kids per year for the next three years (2008-2010) • Science Olympiad Team Regional results 2006 = 1st, 2007 = 2nd, 2008 = 2nd, 2009 = 1st • Science Olympiad Team Nor Cal results: 2006 = 3rd, 2007 = 2nd, 2008 = 2nd, 2009 = 2nd • Math Counts Team Regional results: 2007 = 2nd, 2008 = 2nd • Churchill Student's Artwork Featured in Sacramento Rivercat's 2008 Calendar • Honorable mention in Kaiser’s “Don’t Buy the Lie” regional billboard campaign (2008) • Computer to student ratio is significantly higher than the State and SJUSD average • One teacher Region 3 CLMS Teacher-of-the-Year finalist (Winter 2007) • Two teachers are a SJUSD Teacher of the Year finalist (Spring 2008) • Only Middle School in SJUSD to increase in enrollment (2007, 2008, 2009) • In last five years we have saved 373 rainforest acres on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica • Over $15,000.00 in competitive grants awarded to Churchill teachers each year (2007, 2008) • California Spelling Bee in 2007 = 4th, 2008 = 12th • Churchill Middle School was one of 115 schools in North America selected to receive the $40,000.00 competitive 2008 HP Technology for Teaching (K12) Grant • Churchill Middle School was selected to receive the $7,500.00 2008 Lowe’s grant • Churchill “starred” in local movie theaters before EVERY movie (Summer 2008) • Capital Section Honor Band. 2007 = 6 participants, 2008 = 8 participants • State Honor Band – First school in SJUSD to have a member of this band (2008) • Our GenYes students took first place in a national “Go Green” video contest (2008). • Gen Yes Technology Grant (2006 - 2008). o Competitive grant designed to provide a comprehensive and state-of the art technological learning environment for Churchill students o We met 100% of the State’s benchmarks and were awarded additional $40,000.00 o We received National Recognition twice for our exemplary implementation (2007, 2008) o By spring of 2009 our goal is to create one hundred (100) new Unit Plans that include student use of technology grades 6-8. (150+ units as of Sept 2009)
