Handbook/Rules
SCHOOL CLIMATE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Dear Parents of Cottage Students,
The School Climate Policies and Procedures are the school philosophy and code of behavior developed by the Cottage Staff. The basic concept of school climate is to establish a positive school environment that is safe, healthy, and conducive to learning. Therefore, it is important that the policies, procedures, and school rules be shared and understood by students, parents, and school staff members. Each August and January, teachers carefully and thoroughly review the subsequent expectations for student behavior as outlined in this document. These expectations do not propose to address every possible infraction a child may demonstrate, but rather set fair, clear and consistent expectations for student behavior and thus promote a positive school climate.
Consistent adherence requires both parents and school staff supporting each child’s efforts to internalize these expectations. It will also help the student to understand that both parents and school staff share the same expectation of positive school behavior and support a safe and orderly learning environment.
We encourage your suggestions and comments and thank you for your support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Rich Carlson
Principal, Cottage Elementary
Each student is required to return the pledge form (printed on the back of this page) on the first day of school. Both the student pledge signature and parent pledge signature must be filled out. Thank you.

THE STUDENT PLEDGE
I realize that education is important to me. It helps me develop tools I need to become a happy and productive person. I also understand my parent(s) and teacher(s) want to help me do my very best in school. I know I am the one responsible for my own success, and that I must work hard to achieve it. I have read and discussed the School Climate Policies and Procedures for 2007 - 2008 with my parent(s) and I have an understanding of, and commitment to, appropriate behavior at school. Therefore, I agree to carry out the following:
• I will consistently demonstrate respect and responsibility.
• I will return completed homework on time.
• I will return corrected work to my parent(s).
• I will arrive at school on time every day unless I am ill.
• I will be a cooperative learner.

THE PARENT PLEDGE
I realize that my child’s education is critical, and I understand that participating in my child’s education will help his/her achievement and attitude. I have read and discussed the School Climate Policies and Procedures for 2007 -2008 with my child. Thus, we have an understanding, commitment, and responsibility to be involved with maintaining high academic and behavior standards at Cottage Elementary. Therefore, I agree to carry out the following:
• I will take time to ask my child what specific concepts they are learning at school and what I can do to support them.
• I will provide a quiet place for my child to study.
• I will expect my child to complete his/her homework daily.
• I will make sure my child is getting adequate sleep.
• I will make sure that my child arrives at school on time each day.
• I will spend at least 15 minutes per day reading with my child.

Communication
School-to-Home Communication
Keeping parents and students informed of current and upcoming school issues and events is critical. Our school newsletter (Comet Connection) is an integral part of that communication. During the 2007-08 school year, the Comet Connection will be distributed to students on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. Periodically, Connect-ED messages will also be sent to home phones. Connect-ED is an automated dialing system allowing the principal to send a recorded message to all families. Yet another mode of communication from school to home is our website. It is currently, “under construction” but should be a good source to visit from time to time to check on school schedules, upcoming events, email your child’s teacher, etc.
Additionally, each classroom teacher will send home communications to keep parents informed of student progress and general information in regard to classroom policies / procedures and current events. Examples of communication include, but are not limited to: progress reports, report cards, and classroom newsletters.
Every Monday, students will bring home their Cottage Comet Folder. The folder will typically contain corrected work, assignments and other school communication (including the Comet Connection). The folder is to be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day.
If your child is not coming home with these items, speak to your child first, then feel free to contact his/her teacher.
Home-to-School Communication
Parents and teachers should contact each other whenever there is a question or concern regarding a student’s academic performance or behavior.
· If you have a concern or problem, the first person you should contact is your child’s teacher. It is important to communicate with your child’s teacher since children can sometimes misinterpret information when describing their school day to their parents. You can connect with your child’s teacher through email, a phone message, or a visitation. Please remember that visitations to speak with a teacher or other staff member are most successful when a parent calls in advance to schedule a time.
· If you have discussed and/or worked with your child’s teacher to resolve an issue yet still feel it is unresolved, your next step would be to speak with the principal.
· If you remain dissatisfied after discussing your issue with the principal you will be informed that you may opt to contact the Elementary Director’s office.
Attendance / Absences 575-2306 (ext. 1)
If your child is absent, call the attendance line at 575-2306 and immediately press “1”. If you are unable to reach the school office, please send a note the day your child returns to school explaining the absence.

- Teachers will review the Cottage Behavior Code with students during the first week of school. During class discussion, the necessity for the rules will be emphasized. This will be repeated as needed.
2. This copy of the School Climate and Procedures should be taken home and reviewed by parents with students. Parent signature acknowledging understanding of the code is required.
- Teachers will collect and keep all signed forms relating to the School Climate and Behavior Code, as it may be needed for documentation purposes.
- Each new student and parent will receive a copy of the Behavior Code from the office. The classroom teacher will need to retrieve the signed form from the student by his/her second week of school.
Recognition of Positive Behavior
The major emphasis at Cottage School is positive recognition for appropriate school behavior. Special recognition is given to students who follow the rules of safety and good citizenship in the classroom, on the playground, and in the cafeteria. Character education values will be emphasized and reinforced.
- Classroom – Each teacher will have their own student recognition program, which will be shared with parents at Back-to-School Night.
- Schoolwide-Grades K-6 – High Five Awards may be given to students showing exceptional sportsmanship or citizenship. Weekly, High Five tickets will be chosen randomly in a school wide drawing and a prize will be awarded.
Additional Positive Recognition
- Trimester Award Assemblies will be held so each teacher may recognize students for academic accomplishments, citizenship and homework completion.
- Student art work, projects and other related curriculum work will be displayed in the office and MP Room.
