Cowan Fundamental School

Welcome Back!

Summer vacation is over and we are off and running!  I hope you have enjoyed your summer with many adventures, vacations, family time and reading time! What a busy summer we have had here at Cowan, preparing for your return!  I have always loved the beginning of the school year, both as a child and as a teacher.  I loved opening boxes of new texts and materials, counting to ensure that all my students received the appropriate number of books.  Opening the new crayon box, ensuring that all the blunt tips were intact, taking a whiff of the waxy smell, was all part of the opening day rituals.  Now, opening a school for the first time, as a principal, I will be creating very different rituals: ensuring that books, desks, chairs and supplies have been ordered and are in place for your students’ arrival; making sure that our hard-working custodians have left classrooms dusted, mopped, waxed, and “squeaky clean”; helping our diligent office staff to re-format, order or print forms, handbooks, and schedules; and ensuring that there is a fabulous teacher in place in your child’s classroom!

Many teachers were here throughout the summer getting their classrooms and curriculum ready. They attended trainings and meetings to continue to grow professionally and plan for the year. Additionally, some of us joined a “book study”, reading a common book that will help us to work more effectively with your child this year.

Parents have already been putting in their Volunteer Hours by planning for our 50th Anniversary celebrations happening this year!  Others have been helping teachers and some have been helping out office staff!  Without your help, this year would not be the same!

We have new staff members that have joined the Cowan team: Kristen Register, our new Kindergarten teacher in Room 17; Marika Gralian, a new part-time sixth grade teacher in Room 13; Marc Cambridge, our new music specialist teaching here on Thursdays and Fridays.  We are so excited to have a music specialist this year, in addition to our art and PE specialists!  Please be sure to introduce yourselves to them.

Other exciting news is that our First Graders will start the year with the Permethean Boards installed!  Thanks to the great success of the Jog-a-thon last fall and our supportive PTC, parents, and community members, this technology will follow this group of children into first grade. It will be exciting to see how “technologically savvy” these 6 year olds will be when they become adults!

I want to extend a special welcome and invitation to our new Cowan families.  I would like for you to meet with me on Back to School Night to share a few thoughts regarding Cowan Fundamental School.  Below are the Back to School Nights and the meeting times for New Cowan Families.  You only need to attend one of the New Family meetings.  If you cannot come to your particular child’s meeting, you may choose a different night (only for the meeting; not for Back to School Night.)

August 31, 2009:     Primary Back to School Night: 6:00 – 7:30;
                              Primary “New Cowan Family” Meeting: 5:30 p.m.
September 1, 2009:    Kinder Back to School Night: 5:30 – 6:30;
                                 Kinder “New Cowan Family” Meeting:  5:00 p.m.
September 1, 2009:  Intermediate Back to School Night: 6:00 -7:30;
                               Intermediate “New Cowan Family” Meeting: 5:30 p.m.

I am looking forward to working with all my children and their families this year!
