School Information
ATTENDANCE
Phone the school immediately when your child is absent (979-8006). If possible, call by 9:00 a.m. the day that your child is absent. If this is not possible, call in your child’s absence sometime during that day. State the child’s full name, child’s teacher, date, reason for absence and identify your relationship to the child. If you are unable to report the absence by phone, the student should, upon returning to school, bring a DATED note from the parent/guardian stating the date and reason for the absence. It is necessary that each absence be cleared by a phone call or note from the parent/guardian WITHIN 10 SCHOOL DAYS. Absences that are not cleared by school office personnel turn into truancies after 10 days. You must call the attendance line or send a note. When a student is absent from school for any reason (including illness), the school does not receive funding, and regular attendance is necessary for your child to receive the full benefit of his/her education.
EARLY DISMISSAL For the safety and welfare of our students, please follow these procedures if your child must leave school early: the teacher and office must be notified by the parent or guardian. If a student has a note to be dismissed early, s/he should give it to the teacher. The parent will meet the child at the school office, sign the child out when departing and in when returning, designating the time and date on the office roster.
EMERGENCY CARD INFORMATION Parents or guardians are now required by law to complete three emergency cards at the time of registration. In case of emergency, THE SCHOOL MUST HAVE A PERSON TO CONTACT BY TELEPHONE IF THE PARENT IS NOT AVAILABLE. THIS IS FOR THE STUDENT’S PROTECTION. IF YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS, PHONE #, EMPLOYMENT, BABY SITTER, ETC., PLEASE NOTIFY THE OFFICE, SO THE CARD CAN BE UPDATED. Please keep the school informed of any pending custody case or similar cases in which the right of guardianship is in question.
LUNCH PROGRAM Hot lunches will be served at a proposed cost of $2.00 which includes milk. Free or reduced lunches are available to students of qualifying families. These forms are sent home in August and are also available at any time from the school office. Menus will be sent home at the beginning of each month. It is recommended that students wishing to buy lunches purchase a meal ticket for 10 or 20 lunches. This reduces the number of children who lose or forget their lunch money.
Students who bring their own lunch may choose to purchase white or chocolate milk for $.30. Breakfast will be served for $1.25.
MEDICATION
If it is necessary for a student to take any form of medication during the school day, a physician’s referral form must be completed and on file in the school office. All medication will be kept in the office and will be dispensed through the office. Medication must be brought to the school office by the parent in the original container each time there is a refill. If necessary, please request that the pharmacist split the prescription, _ for school and _ for home. It is the obligation of the parent to inform the office personnel if a student is on any kind of on-going medication, whether it is taken at home or at school, or of any notable health problems such as severe allergies, asthma, etc. DRESS CODE
Students shall dress appropriately for working and learning at school.
- No halter tops, bare midriffs, half-shirts, see-through tops, strapless or “spaghetti strap” tops.

WITHDRAWALS AND TRANSFERS
All changes of address and/or telephone numbers MUST be reported to the office immediately. Students withdrawing from school should inform the office at least one week in advance so school records can be prepared. SCHOOL VISITATIONS
Please feel free to visit Coyle Avenue School. Please phone or send a note to the teacher prior to your visit. On a class visit, plan your time so you do not bring pre-school children as this disrupts the class. Twenty-four hours notice would be appreciated. All parents and other visitors must sign in at the office and a pass will be issued to visit other areas of the campus. All visitors must wear a visitor badge during their school visit. ARRIVAL OF STUDENTS
Make sure your child arrives at school on time and is not tardy. However, we need all students to be supervised. Teachers are not on duty until 7:30 a.m. Due to insurance and liability, we request that students be on campus NO EARLIER THAN 20 MINUTES BEFORE THEIR SCHEDULE CLASS TIME. School begins at 7:45 a.m. Students should not arrive at school before 7:25 a.m. DISMISSAL OF STUDENTS
All students leaving campus early must be signed out in the office. Students will be dismissed only to individuals who are listed on the emergency card.
Students are to go directly home or to their day care providers when class is dismissed. Students walking home from school who are off school grounds are still under the jurisdiction of the school and district’s discipline and behavior policies until the students reach their home. If students wish to utilize the playground after school, they may do so after 6:00 p.m. when Bridges and Discovery Club are over. AMOUNT OF HOMEWORK
The amount of homework shall be in direct relationship to the maturational and achievement levels of students in each class. The purpose of homework is to extend and reinforce what has been learned in class, to develop a sense of self-discipline, personal responsibility, and independent thinking. Assignments which are completed in a student’s home enable a parent to sample the student’s classroom experiences; assist the teacher in gaining insight into a student’s ability to learn independently; provide opportunities for the student to develop proficiency with skills, study habits, and a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. Homework shall be assigned on Monday through Thursday.
Approximate amount of time per night for homework: Kindergarten---------15 - 20 minutes
1st grade---------20 - 30 minutes
2nd - 4th grade---------30 - 45 minutes
5th - 6th grade---------45 - 60 minutes
All students are expected to do pleasure reading, choosing a book of their choice at their reading level for 20 minutes each night. Reading is the major foundation for school success. With daily practice, students become proficient in reading fluency and comprehension, thereby enhancing enjoyment of reading which leads to school success. Some classes may allow the weekend for completion of weekly packet/project. Some students may require more time to complete homework assignments and unfinished class work. SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICIES It is the policy of the San Juan Unified School District not to discriminate on the basis of gender in its educational programs, activities, or employment policies as required by Title IX. The governing board prohibits unlawful sexual harassment of or by anyone in or from the district. If any student, staff, or parent feels that harassment or discrimination has occurred, contact the school immediately. Uniform complaint procedures and forms contain appeal and review procedures and advise interested parties of civil law remedies.
WEAPONS - STRICT SUSPENSION POLICY/EXPULSION POLICY The State of California and San Juan Unified School District are continuing the emphasis on safety for all students.
Please be informed that ANY STUDENT WHO BRINGS A WEAPON, INCLUDING IMITATION OR REPLICAS, TO SCHOOL WILL BE SUSPENDED FOR UP TO FIVE DAYS AND MAY BE RECOMMENDED FOR EXPULSION. UNSPENT SHELLS AND NEARLY ALL TYPES OF KNIVES ARE CONSIDERED TO BE WEAPONS.
Elementary students are not exempt from this rule. Students are advised to keep all items such as pocket knives, bullets, darts, and any type of explosive device (even caps), and all other weapons or “look-alikes” at home! It would be beneficial if parents would reinforce this rule at home with their child.
DISTRICT TRANSPORTATION RULES OF CONDUCT
The rules for pupil conduct are contained in the “Regulations and Laws Relating to Pupil Transportation in California” of the State Department of Education. Students need to wait quietly at the bus stop and remain on the sidewalks or at the side of the street. Students need to stay off private property at the bus stop. It is important that the bus driver be free from disruptive noises and inappropriate behavior in order to ensure the safe transport of all students. This includes: quietly remaining in seats; hands, arms and heads in the bus at all times; respectful to the bus driver and others on the bus. Students who do not abide by transportation’s rules and policies may get a citation which could result in loss of bus privileges. TOBACCO FREE SCHOOL
The use of any tobacco product, at all times, on district property is prohibited. This prohibition applies to all employees, students, and visitors when they are on the school campus or any activity or meeting.

FIELD TRIP POLICY
Participating on a field trip is a privilege accorded to students who complete assignments and exhibit good behavior. Teachers are responsible for the safety and behavior of the children they take off campus during the school day. Students who receive 2 Behavior Reports, 1 automatic Red Card, or 1 suspension the month prior to a field trip will not be allowed to go. They will be given standards based curriculum and spend that day with another teacher on site. PARENT/TEACHER ASSOCIATION
The PTA is made up of parents and staff members and is actively involved in supporting the school’s programs in a variety of ways. Many of the events sponsored by the PTA are designed to bring the community together and provide enjoyable family activities. The PTA budget is used to support field trips, classroom supplies, playground equipment, and other school improvements.
You can support the efforts of the PTA by becoming a member of the PTA and assisting with various special events held throughout the school year. LICE POLICY Coyle Avenue School’s Lice Policy is aligned with the recommendations of the Infectious Diseases Branch of the Division of Communicable Disease Control, California Department of Health Services. Should a student be found with head lice, the parent will be notified immediately to pick up the child. The following steps need to be taken: use an anti-lice treatment; wash all personal clothing, bedding, pillows, combs, brushes in very hot water; articles that cannot be washed, such as stuffed animals, are placed in the clothes dryer for 20 minutes, or sealed in a plastic bag for 3 weeks. If nits are present upon screening (or re-screening) the child is dismissed for treatment or follow-up to reduce opportunities of infecting other children. Parents respond by carrying out the safest and most thorough treatment possible when necessary, and the most effective prevention measures at all times. The result is an environment of mutual assurance, in which the school is confident that parents are doing everything possible, and the parents, in turn, are reassured that the child re-enters a school that supports the most comprehensive program possible.
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM The School Improvement Program (SIP) is funded by the State of California and serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The SIP program provides additional financial resources to help schools better meet the needs of their students. The funds are used to support student learning.
To qualify for School Improvement funds, a written plan is developed each spring. This plan and budget must be approved by the School Site Council which is made up of an equal number of parents and staff members. School Site Council elections are held in September. School Site Council meetings are held quarterly and parents are encouraged and welcome to attend. Agendas are posted 48 hours in advance on the Office door window.
DISTRICT POLICY ON PHOTO/VIDEO USAGE It is the district’s desire to share the achievements and recognitions earned by students with the broader community. This effort can be aided by the use of photos or video footage showing students involved in the classroom and school-related activities. Unless notified in writing of an objection by a parent or legal guardian, photographs and video footage of students and/or names may be posted in district-produced materials including printed publications, television productions, and web sites. School staff will always seek parent/guardian permission before using a photo which identifies a student receiving special education services.
If parents do not wish photographs or videos of their student to be used in these materials, they should complete a Photo/Video Opt-Out form available at school offices. Opt-out requests are valid for the current school your and must be renewed at the start of each school year.
