School Profile
Community: Del Campo High School, which opened in 1963, is located in the middle class suburban community of Fair Oaks, which is 12 miles northeast of the state capitol, Sacramento, California. Approximately half of the students attending Del Campo came to the school through open enrollment.
School: Del Campo, a comprehensive public high school of approximately 1750 students in grades 9 – 12, places a strong emphasis on college preparatory courses. The school operates on a 4X4 Block System, which allows students to take four classes that meet 92 minutes each day for eighteen weeks. Students are able to take eight courses a year instead of the traditional six.
Del Campo’s exemplary academic, athletic, and extra curricular programs are validated by a California Distinguished School designation and a six year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Del Campo has also earned recognition as an AVID National Demonstration School. The program, in its seventh year of operation, includes more than 220 students, who are academically in the middle, and gives them the tools they need to succeed in a four-year university program.
Del Campo’s student publications are exceptional. The Decamhian is rated as one of the top yearbooks in the country, earning all the major awards given in scholastic journalism, including 13 Gold Crown, 13 Pacemakers, and 24 consecutive All-American ratings. In the Fall of 2006 The Decamhian won Best of Show at the National Journalism Education Association Convention and in the spring was awarded a Gold Crown award. The newspaper, The Roar, is a six-time winner of the Columbia Press Association’s Gold Medal, and has earned nine consecutive first place awards from the American Scholastic Press Association. Former journalism students now write for the Sacramento Bee and other publications. The ROAR’s advisor formerly wrote for the Sacramento Bee.
Del Campo’s Air Force Junior ROTC is ranked as one of the top in the nation and achieved “Distinguished Unit” status again in 2006-07. Only 8 percent of the units nationwide were identified “with Merit”, indicating a ranking of “exceeds standards,” with zero deficiencies on the annual assessment by Headquarters. Four unit graduates are in senior ROTC in college with one at the Air Force Academy. One cadet was awarded his commission and pilot wings in the Blackhawk helicopter. A junior attended summer JROTC Honors Camp at the University of New Mexico and served as squadron commander. Several graduates are in worldwide deployment, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, both instructors were selected for “Outstanding Instructor” status.
Del Campo provides one of the finest athletic programs and has won 42 section titles, and ranks fourth among public high schools in the Sac Joaquin section. About 850 students participate in athletic programs, with two earning All-State honors, 52 earning All-League honors, 38 advancing to section level in individual sports, seven earning All-City honors, and seven teams advancing to section playoffs in the 2006-2007 school year.
School Staffing: The professional staff consists of: four full time administrators, 68 full-time and six part-time teachers, six special education teachers and five instructional assistants, four full-time and one part-time counselors, two music teachers, one part-time speech and language specialist, five deaf and hard of hearing interpreters, and one half-time library/media specialist. Graduate degrees are held by 75 percent of the professional staff.
Grading Standards: Classes are graded on a four-point scale of A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0. Honors and Advanced Placement courses add one grade point for each class with a “C” grade or better. Both weighted and unweighted grades are reflected on the transcript, as well as a state GPA, which excludes all ninth grade, physical education, and ROTC grades. Courses taken at the community college level do not appear on the transcript. All courses attempted are listed on the transcript. Rank is determined from a student’s cumulative grades for ninth through twelfth in relation to all students in that grade. In cases where a course is repeated, only the higher grade is calculated into the GPA.
