Mrs. Lazar

Welcome to the Dewey Fundamental Elementary School website!

We are proud to be part of the San Juan Unified School District where families have, through the open enrollment process, a variety of attendance options for their children. As an alternative school, Dewey does not have neighborhood boundaries and students open enroll to our site from all over the District.

Academically, Dewey students score well above the 800 API marker set by the state; however, our students are expected to grow as community members, problem solvers and responsible citizens as well.

Our Vision Statement is “Mind, Body, Heart... Where the whole child matters”

The Dewey community values and emphasizes these components:

MIND:

  • structured learning environment
  • high academic expectations
  • kind, respectful, and accepting behavior

BODY:

  • self-discipline
  • safety
  • perseverance
  • visual, physical and musical movement
  • healthy lifestyle choices

HEART:

  • responsible citizens
  • pride in accomplishments
  • respect for self, others, and property
  • community commitment
  • an embracing of diversity

Dewey is a three-way partnership school; a child learns best when the parent, student, and teacher work together. Strong communication between home and school plays an important role in a child’s success. Parent conferences occur on a formal and informal basis regularly. We believe that students learn best from good examples both during and after school hours.

Family volunteering for school events and help in the classrooms is an essential part of the Dewey education. We believe that when a student sees a parent volunteering at school, the child has a better understanding about the importance of learning.

Please read our Dewey Tiger Tale. The school bulletin is linked to our website and kept current weekly.

We invite you to visit our school site and see for yourselves what the Dewey Fundamental learning experience is all about.

Thanks for visiting our website and we hope to see you soon!

Jeanne Lazar

Dewey Fundamental Principal
