August/September 2009
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome back to Dyer-Kelly Elementary School for the beginning of what promises to be an exciting year. This is my second year at Dyer-Kelly, and I look forward to continuing to build a strong literacy program for our students with the support of our families. Because of your input, our goals this year include developing a parent resource center where our families will be able to check out materials to use at home with their children to improve their reading and math skills. We also hope to continue offering our adult education DVD check-out library to our parents who are acquiring English as a second language.
The district has begun a centralized enrollment process this year. That means students who are new to the San Juan Unified School District will need to enroll their child at a new centralized location called San Juan Central. The center will allow new students to be placed in school sooner while providing families with access to all the resources they need in one convenient location. Parents can call (916) SAN-JUAN. That’s (916) 726-5826.
Dyer-Kelly has several new staff members this school year. Brooke Thomas is our new vice principal. She comes to Dyer-Kelly with 20 years of experience as an educator. Our new office staff includes Amy Coursey who will be happy to assist parents as our attendance clerk. Our first grade team welcomes Erin Cassady and Joanna Rowland this year. Brenda Kastl joins our third grade team, and Lisa Hurst completes our fourth grade team. I hope you get a chance to welcome these new members of our Dyer-Kelly family.
On the first day of school, all students will bring home our school folder which will include our parent handbook, the district parent handbook, a 2009-10 school calendar, and 2 blank emergency card which should be completed and returned to your child’s teacher. I encourage you to keep this folder handy throughout the school year to use as a reference.
I would like to join with the teachers and encourage all parents to volunteer in their child’s classroom. You will experience the joy of watching your child grow and learn, and your participation will provide a valuable service to your child’s teacher. I look forward to seeing all of you throughout the school year.
Sincerely,
Deborah Wegsteen
Principal
