  • El Camino Fundamental High’s librarian wins prestigious national grant

Andrea Catania-Stephenson, librarian at El Camino Fundamental High School, recently received the 2016 American Association of School Librarians’ Innovative Reading Grant. The $2,500 grant supports the planning and implementation of a unique program that encourages reading, especially with struggling readers. Catania-Stephenson’s project is called “Enhancing Literature Through Personal Expression.” Starting in the fall of 2016, Catania-Stephenson will work with El Camino teachers Ari Santillanes and Kurtis Roddewig to purchase new young adult books for the library and classrooms; to create video book talks and reviews; and to generate QR codes that will make the videos available through Schoology. “Andrea’s proposal really resonated with the committee,” Kelly Hincks, award committee chair, said in a news release. “The project supports student learning by fostering a love for reading. It also allows students to connect reading to their interests and provides support for their diverse learning levels. Students will be given the chance to develop their discussion and collaborative working skills due to having access to books that engage them.”

Common Core logo Big changes are underway in your students’ classrooms: 46 states across the country have adopted key academic standards that will replace current California standards in English/language arts and math.
The goal of the rigorous Common Core State Standards is to instill the 21st century, higher-thinking skills that prepare all students for college and their careers - as well as to succeed in a global economy and society.
