Thank you for visiting El Sereno High School’s web page. For over 25 years, El Sereno has been the flagship for independent study high schools in the state of California. El Sereno was one of the first independent study high schools established in coordination with the state department of education.

El Sereno is located on two sites in the San Juan district in order to serve the entire district. The school is WASC accredited, so credits earned at El Sereno are transferable to any high school or higher learning institution in the world. El Sereno is the only independent study program that is part of the San Juan Unified School District—it is not a charter school.

The successful El Sereno student is very self-motivated. Junior and senior students tend to be the most successful with this alternative learning style. Independent study uses the same district adopted textbooks and curriculum in all subjects, it is the unique delivery method that distinguishes attending a traditional high school and attending an independent study high school. Students are held to the same district and state standards as any other California high school student. So why do students even bother attending El Sereno?

The following reasons were given by students why El Sereno met their needs: flexible hours, one-on-one teaching, and the option of learning at their own pace. It is the communication and bonding between students and their teachers that is the key to success for most El Sereno students.

If you would like more information about El Sereno, or if you have any further comments about independent study, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me through e-mail at rerickson@sanjuan.edu or call me at 916-971-5060.

Sincerely,

Rose Erickison, Principal
