FALL 2009

Great job, Coach Buchmiller and the Varsity Soccer team! For those of you who may not have heard, the boys were down 1-0 at halftime of their final league game, and began to lose it emotionally. John got them focused and fired-up, and when they took the field, their renewed fight allowed them to deal Capital Christian a loss on their home field. Not only did this victory put us into the playoffs,  it was also a great confidence builder, as Capital Christian, the league champion, had only one loss before last night’s game. Encina continued to win their playoff games by defeating Legrand High School 4-1 on Tuesday, November 10. They then faced off against Lindhurst on Thursday, November 12, and prevailed. This qualified them for the finals, which would be played against Capital Christian. It was an exciting game with lots of Encina support in the stands. The game was in its second overtime when Miguel Aguilar scored off of a chest trap which he volleyed solidly into the goal. Read the Sacramento Bee article about our 2009 Golden Empire League champions.

Soccer isn’t the only game in town . . . Volleyball plays their last game today. Coach Todd has built a very competitive program in just one season. The increased skills of both the JV and Varsity teams has earned the respect of the league. Please try to make it out today to support the girls. JV begins at 4:30 followed by the varsity.

Something that these two coaches have in common is that they were both recognized by the Golden Empire League as the coaches of the year for their respective sports. Thanks for all you do for the team and for Encina, Coach Buchmiller and Coach Todd!

We know you haven’t forgotten about football. The Sacramento Bee wrote an article on an interesting Encina/Highlands link. This year, Coach Lawrence has set Encina football on the right path — building a true football program rather than putting together a team. If you have  made it out to a game, you have witnessed our team’s high level of skill and how they have kept each opponent on their heels for the entire game.

Cross Country also competed in post-season play. This year, eight runners were headed to sub-sections at Angel’s Camp. This race was free and it was a beautiful drive to get there. If you were headed to the football game instead, make sure you wish the kids good luck.
