Doctor & Nurse Preparatory Program
Does your daughter or son have a strong desire and commitment to enter the medical field, perhaps in one of the following high level professions and earn college credits while in high school? | Physician | Nurse | | Pharmacist | Dentist | Mission of the Doctor & Nurse Preparatory Program: - Provide a strong academic program that prepares students for admission to and completion of a four-year university.
- Prepare students to become highly competitive applicants to health professional schools.
Expectations of the Doctor & Nurse Preparatory Program students: - Enroll in the most rigorous, accelerated classes with an emphasis on math, science, and language arts (Honors, Advanced Placement and 20 units of college coursework on campus)
- Commit to the four year study plan
- Maintain a 3.0 academic grade point average
- Participate in summer enrichment
- Pre-9th Pre-Freshman Summer Clinic - introduction to the program
- Pre-10th Pre-Sophomore Summer clinical rotations
- Pre-11th Pre-Junior/Pre-Senior Summer Clinic six-week externship
- Opportunities to get involved in research or summer courses
- Participate in Saturday academics, study trips and activities
- Complete a minimum of 110 hours of community service during the four years in the program
- 225 Hours of clinical experience
- Enroll in the Medical Profession Development (MPD) Classes IA/IB, II, III, and IV. There are four purposes of the MPD classes.
- To give students the necessary skills to ensure academic success in high school and college
- To strengthen interpersonal and personal skills required of health care professionals
- To introduce professional and career specific skills via the use of the on campus clinical laboratory
- Prepare student for SAT testing, college admission and scholarship application

Student Activities and Opportunities: Students are highly encouraged to participate in some or all of the following activities: - Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA): Nationwide organization for students preparing for a career in the health field. Opportunities for competition at state and national level in public speaking, medical language and a variety of other professional skills
- Academic Decathlon: Highly competitive, compete at local and state level geared at promoting and encouraging high academic achievement and critical thinking skills
- Science Olympiad: Students compete against other high schools in individual and team competition in all areas of science with the opportunity to compete at state and national levels
- Pre-Medical School Seminars: Sponsored by U.C.D. medical admissions office outreach program to advise students on how to become successful students and strong applicants to medical school.
- National Technical Honor Society (NTHS): Honors student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence, and enhance career opportunities for the NTHS membership.
- California Scholarship Federation (CSF)
Visitations During the school year, prospective students and/or parents/guardians are welcome to visit our program. You can schedule a visit by calling the program office at 971-7570. Admission Procedure Prospective 8th grade students should Call the program office, 971-7570 to receive an application or attend the Doctor & Nurse Preparatory Program information night on October 21, 2009 at Encina. Qualified applicants should meet the following criteria: - The student must communicate a strong desire to enter the health care field as shown in their personal statement and possibly an interview with Encina staff.
- 7th Grade STAR test results should be at least proficient and preferably advanced in Language Arts and Math.
- The student should have have a “B” or higher grade level in math, science and language arts in the middle school years.
- Students should be ready to enroll in Geometry or Algebra 2 in the 9th grade.
Who can apply? - 8th grade students from any San Juan Unified School District middle school, private school or out-of-district middle school.
- Current 9th grade students can apply provided they have completed required academic courses at their current high school.
