Academic Program/Philosophy
Garfield‘s academic program is aligned with California State Standards. We utilize textbooks approved by the California State Department of Education and adopted by the Board of Education of San Juan Unified School District.
We believe that all students can learn. We are also aware that our students begin each academic year with individual academic strengths and challenges. We address these differences by providing intervention and support where needed. Our English Language Learners receive additional instruction in English Language acquisition, as required by law. Our special education students are already in classes with a reduced adult-child ratio and teachers who have specialized training in meeting their needs. These students are mainstreamed into regular education classes to the fullest extent possible, allowing them to make progress toward meeting California State Standards. The majority of our students are working to meet their grade level standards. We utilize standards-aligned curriculum, ongoing and summative assessments, and leveled reading and math groupings to meet these students’ needs. We also strive to challenge those students who will benefit from an accelerated and expanded curriculum. We are conscious of our responsibility to differentiate curriculum for these students, allowing them to extend grade level concepts and skills in their areas of strength. A child who earns a “4” or Advanced on their Report Card will truly have demonstrated superior academic achievement.
Academics are important but they are not the only focus at Garfield. We are also working hard to develop responsible and respectful students. Our school rules emphasize respect for each other, concern and caring for those in our community, and accountability for one’s own choices and actions.
