Building Bridges to Student Success
Bridges After-School Program
The San Juan Unified School District's comprehensive Bridges After-School Program provides FREE academic intervention and pro-social enrichment in a safe and positive environment. The Bridges After-School Program currently serves 2,000 students grades 1st-12th at 34 elementary schools, 5 middle schools and 1 high school across the district. Students realize academic success through the implementation of each of the four components of the program: academic support, enrichment/disguised learning, pro-social skills/recreation, and parent support and empowerment. In order for a student to be successful in the program, strong relationships between program staff, school staff, parents and students are needed. Relationships are key! Program Components - Academic Support - The academic support component of the program consists of homework and tutorial assistance, reading and academic intervention/remediation.
- Enrichment/Disguised Learning - The enrichment/disguised learning component is implemented through a learning center approach. Learning centers may include nutrition, art, mathematics, science, reading, drama and other topics that are complementary to traditional school day instruction. For example, if students are learning fractions in the classroom, a learning center may focus on students participating in a cooking lesson following a recipe.
- Pro social Skills/Recreation - The pro social skills/recreation component consists of structured indoor and outdoor activities.
- Parent Support and Empowerment - A Parent Orientation is provided at the beginning of the program to provide information and facilitate communication between program staff, parents and students.
Student Population Students are referred to the program by administrators, teachers, parents, or a self-referral. Typically, students who participate in the Bridges After-School Program are in need of minimal academic assistance, which is usually in the form of help with homework. Enrichment and recreation activities provide lots of fun for all students. Attendance Policy Students must attend Bridges After-School five days per week for a minimum three hours per day. If a student is absent, parents are expected to communicate, written or verbally, to the Bridges program staff in addition to the traditional school day staff. Ten cumulative unexcused absences can be considered excessive and a student's enrollment in the program may be revoked. Space is limited and there are usually waiting lists. Program Staff - Site Coordinator - The site coordinator is responsible for student and staff oversight. They sustain communication with site administration, teaching staff and parents, and maintain program paperwork.
- Academic Coach - Each elementary school program has an academic coach, who is a credentialed teacher. The academic coach oversees lesson and activity planning, and assures that all learning center activities enrich traditional school day instruction.
- Teacher - Each middle school program has a credentialed teacher on staff. They provide study skill lesson plans, study skill instruction and homework assistance for all enrolled students.
- Instruction Assistant - Instructional Assistants assist the site coordinator with lesson and activity planning, act as a liaison for the program, strengthening communication with regular day school staff, and provide team leadership to a small group of students.
- Recreation Leaders - Recreation leaders provide team leadership to small groups of students, work with a team to develop small group lesson plans, and are responsible to plan and facilitate all recreation activities.
