Howe Avenue School Uniform Dress Code for Students

Howe Avenue is a Uniform School. All students at Howe Avenue are expected to wear a school uniform, consisting of PLAIN white or black shirts (MUST HAVE A COLLAR) -- no T-shirts, undershirts, halter tops, spaghetti straps, etc. -- and PLAIN white or black pants, skirts, shorts, dresses, or jumpers. Blue jeans (not sagging or torn) are also acceptable. Undergarments should not be visible at any time. The torso must be covered. Sweatshirts, light jackets, shoes, socks, noncanvas belts, etc. should also be either black or white (PLAIN - no pictures, designs or writing). HEAVY WINTER COATS ONLY may be in other colors. Shoes should be suitable for outdoor play and P.E. - no flip flops.

The decision to become a uniform school was the result of a vote by our entire school community in April 1998. The SanJuan Unified Board of Education approved our request to establish a uniform policy in June 1998. Parents and the rest of the school community made the most recent changes to the policy in the spring of 2005. Parents OVERWHELMINGLY chose to continue as a Uniform School.
Uniforms are available for purchase online. One website address is www.frenchtoast.com. At the beginning of the school year, uniforms are on sale at many local discount stores (Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Factory 2-U) and local department stores (Kohl’s, Mervyn’s, Penney’s, Old Navy, and Sears). If you are unable to provide uniform clothing for your child, please call 566-2165 (ask for Rosina), so that arrangements can be made for your child to be provided with a shirt and a pair of pants from the National Assistance League. It is the parents' responsibility to keep uniforms clean and in good repair, even if they must be washed by hand.

Fridays and Picture Days will be “NO UNIFORM” days. Students may wear other clothing as long as it complies with the dress code outlined in the District’s Parent Handbook. Because of gang influences in this area of the city, NO CHILD will be allowed to wear solid red (Norte’s or Bloods) or solid blue (Surenos or Crips) to school at any time. The Sacramento County Gang Unit will be advised of students who persist in violating this rule. This can result in being identified by the police as a gang member.

If you wish to exempt your child from wearing a uniform, you will be required to make an appointment with the principal to request a School Uniform Waiver. Waivers will be granted ONLY under extraordinary circumstances. The Uniform Policy was a school community decision, and the entire school community will be expected to honor that decision. Several revisions
have been made to the policy to accommodate parent concerns and to make compliance easier.

The Uniform Policy will be enforced. If a student does not wear a uniform to school, s/he will receive a reminder of the uniform policy and will be provided with a “loaner” uniform that will be returned at the end of the day. They will be asked to wear the loaner over their clothes or asked to change into the loaner uniform. Other actions may include calls to parents, taking a child home to change, or a Dress Code Violation entered in the District Discipline System.
