FIELD TRIP - The students and teachers of Palos/Via went on a field trip on September 30 to Leather’s Farm near Woodland. They learned new things about agriculture and food production, and came back with rice, beans, and good memories. The following stories were written in the English classes by two of the students who went on the trip. Students were told to use a lot of descriptive words!
I hopped on the old bus and slowly slithered to my seat. The bus started, and it sounded like people were throwing rocks at the bus. I prepared for the very long drive to the stimulating rice, bean, and sunflower fields. I was harkening to my ipod the whole way there. I woke up, and all I could see was a lot of farming equipment and a lot of rice.
Next, we glanced around the farm while being educated about these different tractors. Then we got back on the bus and headed to the rice field and sunflower seed field. Evan and I went to the middle of the field and brought back a sunflower plant. Finally the vivacious trip was over, and we headed back to the school. Then we waited for the very tardy bus and went home.

Yesterday, we went to Mr. Silberman’s wife’s family farm near Knights Landing. At first I wasn’t sure how things were going to go because the teachers said that in the past, field trips didn’t go very well. I think we shocked the teachers with our behavior, since no one tried anything idiotic or childish. On the ride there it was pretty boring, but it was all right since I had some snacks to eat. Once we got to the farm, I noticed a lot of old and broken equipment and was wondering why they still had it, and they informed us they only use it on occasions.
While we were at the farm, we walked around their house and looked and climbed on the combine tractor. This tractor is so big that when you’re harvesting, it can take out three rows of crops at once. The first field we went to was the bean field, and we also took a look at the walnut trees. After we did that, we went back to the farm, to go to the bathroom and then head to the last field. When we got to the rice and sunflower field, we presented our Earth Science projects and listened to one of the farmers tell us about the crops. Once we finished that, we ate our lunch and threw the football around, but it was so windy, the wind kept catching the ball and the ball flew into the water, many times. Lastly, we went to the sunflower fields and then we hopped on the bus and went back to school.
