LICHEN SCHOOL
K – 8 PROGRAM

NOVEMBER 12, 2009

      Message from Principal Butorac

Just one more week before our Thanksgiving break! One week after the break we will be on a minimum day schedule for parent/teacher conferences. This shortened day schedule allows teachers to meet with parents to discuss their child’s progress toward standards for the first trimester. Please take the time to write down any questions you may have for your child’s teachers before your conference. Your questions might include:

·       Is my child getting all their work completed on time?

·       How does my child get along with other children?

·       What can I do at home to help my child with math or reading?

·       What do I do if my child does not understand the homework?

I will be at some conferences and look forward to seeing many of you.

As Open Enrollment has been extended this year (11/16 – 1/29), many high schools are beginning to host their Parent Information Nights. Mesa Verde will present on Tuesday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m. and San Juan High hosts their night on Thursday, November 19th at 7:00 p.m. If you have other high schools in mind, do not hesitate to check San Juan’s website for each particular school and their pertinent information.

Lost and Found…please advise your child to check our lost and found rack. We have a multitude of sweatshirts and jackets that will soon be sent to Goodwill if not retrieved.

Finally, our excellent office staff works very hard to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum. If forgotten lunches are delivered to school, students should check with the cafeteria first rather than expect a call in their classroom… as lunches would be delivered there.

Have a wonderful holiday…

                                                ~ Ms. B.

Get in the Zone for Stronger Bones

By Linda Mattson RD SNS

Bone-Afide Body Benefits
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and
provides three important benefits:

1.      It provides a strong lift for bone growth and

2.      It strengthens the skeleton during childhood and beyond.

3.      It contributes to healthy teeth

Calcium is also found in the bloodstream and helps
provide the power for:

  • Normal Heartbeat
  • Blood Clotting, Hormone and Enzyme Secretion
  • Muscle Function

…all of which keep the body pumped up and ready to perform.

Benefits: The Big Lift

The body "lifts" (withdraws) the Calcium it needs from bones to maintain blood levels which explains why children need sufficient amounts of Calcium every day.

Calcium Counts For Kids!
How much Calcium is enough? What is the Calcium comfort level? According to the Institute of Medicine, the group that determines nutrient needs, kids' daily needs for Calcium vary by age:

  • 1- to 3-year-olds need 500 milligrams
  • 4- to 8-year-olds need 800 milligrams
  • 9- to 19-year-olds need 1,300 milligrams

And, how about this extra Calcium "Bone-anza":
A Journal of the American Dietetic Association study linked higher Calcium intake from milk and dairy foods to lower body fat levels in children aged 2 to 8. Now that's Calcium cool!

Children and teens who replace Calcium-rich beverages with alternatives such as sodas, energy drinks or sugary beverages and dieters are especially at risk for decreased calcium intake.

Dairy products: Yogurt, Cheese, Fluid Milk (flavored, reduced fat and non-fat, lactose free, soy)

Non-Dairy: Fortified RTE Cereals, Soy beverage, Canned Fish with soft bones, Tofu, Pink Salmon, Broccoli, Bok Choy, Collards, Spinach, Soybeans, Greens, Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Ocean Perch, Oatmeal, Cowpeas, Dried Beans, Kale, Okra, Blue Crab, Clams, Calcium Fortified Foods, and Rainbow Trout.

*All SJUSD meals are offered with a choice of fat free and low- fat milks – a great way to get 300 mg. calcium!

Note: After June 30th next year’s meal eligibility forms are available at: www.sanjuan.edu/services/food.

Resident Kindergarten Enrollment &
Sibling Enrollment for Choice* Schools
2010-2011

How will I know if my child is eligible for Kindergarten, and what are the dates to enroll?
Students who will be five years old on or before December 2, 2010, are eligible to enroll into public school in the San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD) for the 2010-2011 school year. Enrollment packets will be available at all school sites on January 4, 2010. Site placement requests for school sites will also begin January 4, 2010 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm (see attached list for specific dates). If you attend a site placement date you will be able to make an enrollment appointment that same day. If you do not attend your site placement date, booking for enrollment appointments will start on February 1, 2010. Kindergarten enrollment begins March 1, 2010 at San Juan Central. SJUSD will not schedule kindergarten enrollments until March because this allows the required physical to meet both kindergarten and first grade requirements.
What will I need to bring to the site placement request date?
A legal guardian will have to bring two documents to the site request date: a valid updated CA ID and an original county issued birth certificate for the child. Please note we will not accept hospital issued birth certificates.
How will I secure placement for my child after I attend the placement request date?
When you come to your school site placement date you will sign up and fill out a simple survey. Once the survey is completed you will turn it in to SJC and make an enrollment appointment. You will have until June 1, 2010 to enroll your child in the SJUSD to secure your spot on the placement list.
Is there any priority given?
Families with siblings enrolled at the requested site for the 2010-2011 school year will be given priority. Please note: Sibling priority is given to applicants who have a sibling currently enrolled at the requested school site who will continue to be enrolled in 2010-2011.
What will I need to enroll my child when I come to my enrollment appointment?
The following documents are required to enroll any child in the SJUSD.
1.    Original birth Certificate. Must be a county issued birth certificate, no hospital souvenirs.
2.    Immunization Record (Documentation that shows your child has the required immunizations for school entry)
3.    CA Identification. Must be updated and valid with current correct address. 4.    Address verification, which consists of the following two items.
a.    Mortgage statement or rental/ lease agreement
&
b.    Utility Bill (SMUD, PG&E, Water) NO PHONE BILLS
****** There are no exceptions to the documentation needed to enroll. *******
If you want to request placement at a school other than your residence school for next school year you must participate in Open Enrollment. See district website for more information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following dates have been set for site placement requests for all San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD) elementary and K-8 schools. Families are encouraged to enroll starting March 1, 2010 to secure their placement. Families who do not enroll by June 1, 2010 will relinquish their spot on the site placement list and will be placed based on space available.
