Dress Code & Electronic Device Guidelines
Mariposa Avenue Elementary School
Dress Code High standards of dress promote good citizenship and a positive, respectful, and safe learning environment. The school staff monitors the appropriateness of student clothing and may talk to students if their clothing is a distraction and/or disruption to learning and teaching. We ask for parent support as we strive for an environment that reflects high values of a respectful educational setting.
• Plain t-shirts or polo shirts, in any color, are strongly encouraged to be ‘typical’ school dress. • Mariposa t-shirts or sweatshirts are available for purchase (very inexpensive) through PTA. Although these can be worn on any day of the week, Fridays are ‘spirit days’ and students are reinforced for wearing a Mariposa shirt. • Footwear must be worn at all times. Sandals must have back straps. Closed toed shoes are recommended. Students may be engaged in Physical Education classes on any day of the week. Because of this, athletic shoes are the most appropriate type of shoe to be worn to school. • Hats and dark glasses may not be worn in the classroom. State law does allow hats to be worn for protection from the sun. • Clothes or buttons with printing or pictures depicting tobacco, drugs or alcoholic beverages, or those that are profane, sexually suggestive, or depict violence or unlawful acts are unacceptable. If a clothing item is a disruption, a student can be asked to change into more appropriate clothing. • Students may not wear any item of clothing, hats, sweatbands, bandanas or other headgear, symbols or devices associated with group intimidation or gang/cult affiliation. • Students may not wear garments that bare or expose the midriff/torso such as tank tops, mesh tops, tube tops, half shirts, halters, sleeveless/collarless tops, spaghetti strap tops, etc. Tops need to be long enough to allow for normal movement without revealing one’s stomach. Underwear may not be exposed. • Students may wear tailored, hemmed shorts of moderate length. Swimsuits and cutoffs are not allowed. • Pants must “fit” at the waist. Pants must be an appropriate length, not dragging on the ground. No sagging allowed. • No object should be worn that is unsafe or a disruption. This includes chains, spiked collars, spiked wristbands, skeletons, skulls or crossbones. Jewelry, including necklaces and earrings, should not be a distraction. Large hoop earrings should not be worn due to a potential for injury. • Hair must be a natural color (i.e., no green, purple, etc.). Hair dye must be permanent and should not ‘run’ if water touches it. • Elementary school students may not wear make-up to school.
Electronic Device Guidelines • An increasing number of students are bringing walkman-type radios, video games, skateboards, toys, CD’s, and other distractive items to school. Electronic devices like beepers and pagers are prohibited. Not only are these items vulnerable to damage, or theft, they are disruptive. Please do not allow your student to bring radios, iPods, walkmans, or other electronic items to school. If a student is referred to the office for disrupting the class, we will hold the item until a parent is able to pick it up. • Cell phones must remain in a student’s backpack during the school day. Calls (and text messaging) are not allowed during the day. Use of the cell phone camera must be limited to off campus activities. In the event of a school emergency, teachers and/or law enforcement personnel will inform students when cell phones can be used to call parents. These guidelines are established through our Safe Schools protocols and must be followed for the safety of the full school community.
A student's cell phone may be taken if they are found to be using it during school hours. Parents must come to the school to pick up the cell phone (or other electronic device). At that time, the administrator and parent will discuss the situation and the determination will be made by the administrator as to whether the student will be allowed to carry the device from that time forward.
