Mesa Verde High School
Home of the Mavericks
Samuel Augustus Maverick (July 23, 1803 - September 2, 1870) was a Texas lawyer who received cattle for payment of a debt. He was not a rancher, so he hired someone to manage the cattle. The cattle were never branded with a unique mark used to identify ownership of the cattle. The term maverick, therefore, at first referred to an unbranded range animal, especially a stray calf. Over time, the term acquired the additional meaning of an "unbranded" man, someone whose style or activities depart significantly from the norm, someone who exhibits great independence in thought and action.
Mesa Verde High School seeks to create for its students an environment that will foster an independent ability to learn and develop their talents. A variety of unique programs and academies complement a solid core of academic classes. Student Body activities, sports programs, volunteer opportunities, clubs, school-to-career pathways, and class projects all offer students numerous ways to develop and express their unique style.
