2013 Spring Term Principal’s Message

As we enter the spring and final term of the year, we have many important activities and responsibilities facing us as we close out this school year.

First, STAR testing starts the week of April 22nd and runs for two week this school year.  After listening to students and teachers about the fatigue our testing schedule over the last three years, we have decided to lengthen our testing windows and allow for breaks between testing days.  We will be testing on April 23,25, 30 and May 2.  April 25th and May 2nd are Thursdays and the school day will end at 2:55pm.  We believe this format will our students to stay focused both on the testing as well as the learning continuing in their classes.

Mesa Verde is also going through its six year W.A.S.C. Accreditation next March.  Our staff is currently working on our Self-Study and we will asking for our parents and community support and feedback.  The W.A.S.C. Accreditation is a thorough review of every aspect of our high school and helps guide our future work.

As with the end of every school year, we are working on our Master Schedule for next year and preparing to offer more programs.  Mesa Verde’s projected enrollment next year is 975 students.  We have been steadily declining in enrollment over the last 4 years which has caused a reduction in staffing and course offerings, but it appears our enrollment is stabilizing.  We are offering two new Advanced Placement classes next year:  AP Chemistry and AP Art Design – 2D.  We are also coordinating with the Sacramento Office of Education to offer two new ROP/CTE programs at Mesa next year.  The first is a Careers in Arts, Media and Entertainment program that will build on our already successful Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) programs by offering students real world experience in the area of their interests.  We will also be offering a Banking ROP program that will provide students the training necessary to work in financial institutions.

These new courses and programs will offer more opportunities for our students as they pursue their futures.

Finally, Graduation is fast approaching.  Graduation will be Wednesday, May 29th at 7pm at Memorial Auditorium.  We will be meeting with our seniors on Thursday, April 25th to discuss the important information they will need to get across the stage.  And, the last day of school this for the rest of students is Wednesday, June 5th

It has been a great school year and we look forward to finishing strong!

Thanks

Rick Messer
