Why Choose Mesa Verde High School?
A Small School With Big Opportunities
We provide a small school size (about 1000 students) with a diverse and vast array of learning and growth opportunities. A strong academic core with a rich selection of AP classes, award winning Fine Arts programs, community-linked career exploration partnerships, community service programs, a wide variety of clubs and student activity programs, and competitive sports programs, all contribute to providing students with an array of choices with which to be involved and explore their interests. Big enough to serve group interests, yet small enough to care for the individual.
Strong Community Ties
Our parent Booster Club has, for many years, run a local bingo program that has contributed funding for scholarships, classroom equipment, coaching positions, and school events. Parents also are partners on the School Site Council, providing input on school programs and funding through the School Site Plan. The Small Business Academy program, designed to give students an exposure to the world of small business management, works with local businesses – including Sunrise Mall – to provide real-world experience and mentoring for the students in the program. A partnership with the Citrus Heights Police Department provides a Safe Schools Resource Officer (Officer Ben Kema) on campus each day. Working in conjunction with our Counseling Department and Student Assistance Program Coordinator, this team provides for student safety, intervention and support.
Numerous Paths to Student Success
The AVID program, serving all four grade levels, gives students the mentoring and personal skills needed to succeed in their transition to four-year universities and colleges. Mesa Verde features the largest graduating AVID classes in the district. The Link Crew program provides for freshman, from registration before the school year starts to the end of the school year, a support network that guides and mentors 9th grade students in their transition to high school. Regular articulation meetings and communications with Sylvan Middle School enhance this relationship. A before-and-after school tutoring program, supported by teachers and high-achieving students, allows students to get additional help in any subject area. The Regional Occupation Program (ROP) gives junior and senior students the opportunity to explore, and receive credit for, a vast array of countywide programs that give a real world look at numerous job fields. Our Business Academy, Careers with Children program, Careers in Education program, Community Action program and Independent Living Skills program all provide each unique student population served with the tools to succeed after high school.
Academic Growth
For the past decade, our school has increased its overall API score, and is committed to continued improvement. A course in AP Spanish, our sixth AP level course, has been added to the curriculum. We increased the total number of students taking the SAT exam, and had the overall test averages on the SAT's increase. Increasing numbers of our students are selecting to transition directly to four-year universities and colleges, especially among students in our strong AVID program
