Student Assistance Program - SAP

How We Can Help You
The San Juan Unified School District’s Student Assistance Program (SAP)
provides a systematic process to identify, refer, educate and support
students who exhibit behaviors that interfere with the learning process.
SAP referrals come from staff, parents, students, or community members.
Self-referrals are accepted as well as internet referrals.
There are many behaviors that indicate a referral to the SAP might be
helpful. Eight of the most basic are listed below. However, please refer
students who display other troubling behaviors not listed here.
    • Grades;
    • Attendance;
    • Behavior;
    • Involvement with the disciplinary system;
    • Legal problems;
    • Problems with extracurricular activities;
    • Problems at home; and
    • Tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs-specific behaviors.
Student Assistance Program
    • Identify students who have or who are at high-risk to develop behaviors that interfere with their academic success;
    • Contact identified students and offer assistance through group
participation or referrals to school or community resources;
    • Educate students on problem areas, available resources, and skill
development;
    • Support referred students through group and mentor program
participation. Group participation is short term, usually six—eight
weeks;
    • Model appropriate adult coping, decision making and conflict resolution
skills; and
    • Promote resiliency through participation in the PALS program.

What We Cannot Do

    • Provide therapeutic counseling;
    • Provide long term services;
    • Provide one-to-one counseling;
    • Maintain students who are disruptive in groups; and
    • Take leadership in crisis response situations.
