About Our Teachers

Teachers at NSJHS work in cross-curricular small learning communities focused on career pathways.  Students complete both career pathway certificate programs and a-g requirements for college.  Faculty and staff should possess knowledge, understanding, and/or willingness to work in a small learning community. NSJHS staff is working toward the following goals:

  • Commitment to be a professional learner with interest in co-teaching/planning/learning/reflecting with colleagues/consultants
  • Commitment to consensus building and distributed leadership
  • Commitment to equal access to high level of instruction for all students
  • Commitment to using an inclusion model
  • Commitment to making choices based on what students need regardless of what is easiest/most convenient for adults
  • Develop academically supportive relationships with students
  • Excited about developing strong personal relationships with students
  • Flexibility to work outside the box/create a new box and think of new ways to incorporate learning to include all students
  • Know how to identify and provide interventions to address gaps in learning
  • Learning/leading side by side with students
  • Make instructional decisions based on data, state standards and student learning needs
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Take on both formal and informal leadership roles
  • Understanding how to use literacy strategies in all content areas
  • Use a progressive discipline plan in conjunction with strong, clear, consistent expectations for classroom behavior
  • Use of best practices (balanced literacy, Zone of Proximal Development, Camborne's Conditions of learning)
  • Use of on-going formative and summative assessment
  • Willing to explore different learning styles of your students
  • Willingness to work on a team (develop advisory curriculum, prepare for STAR/CAHSEE, work on college prep) and collaborate openly with colleagues
