About Our School
Orange Grove
Orange Grove Adult School offers a wide variety of academic, vocational, and life-skills classes for 210 adults with developmental disabilities. Thirteen certificated teachers and many aides instruct academics, job readiness, leisure skills through the arts, social, and physical fitness classes. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Special Olympics, and Community Access. In all cases, programs are designed to enable each student to become a contributing member of home and community.
There are 3 programs on campus to meet the varying needs of the 210 students. About 2/3 of the students rotate to 6 different classes a day. We offer approximately 35 different classes from computer skills to reading and math, PE to gardening and community access, cooking to choir and art, geography to sign language and journalism. The students can select classes that meet their individual needs. We are lucky enough to have an interactive white board in every classroom as well as a full computer lab and the ability to broadcast a 'newscast' to each room.
There is a self contained class for 14 of our multi-handicapped students needing a staff to student ratio of 1:3. Most of these students take 1 or more classes in the rotating program but spend the majority of the day together learning in their garden, kitchen, or classroom.
Our third program on campus is a life skills class designed to meet the needs of 31 students with significant cognitive and behavioral needs. There is a 1:3 staff to student ratio for these students and the program aides are provided by United Cerebral Palsy (UCP). These students are able to access the community on a daily basis.
In addition to our daily curriculum, Orange Grove puts on several special events throughout the year. We have an annual Walk/Wheel-a-thon, a Veteran's Day Program, a Holiday Celebration, a Volunteer Appreciation Event, a Jazz Festival and BBQ, and a Spring Concert, as well as several cultural events each year. We have the support of a very active Family and Friends Volunteer Club that has earned money for special projects and items for the school.
