Time to Teach

Charles Peck is committed to the Time To Teach program.  The program is based on what we know about good parenting and seeks to help students be problem solvers when it comes to dealing with whatever is interfering with their learning.  Research supports the fact that children do best in a structured, caring environment where expectations are clearly defined.

The first several weeks of the year are spent explicitly teaching and practicing expectations inside and outside the classroom.  These expectations are called “Teach-To’s.”  Students practice the appropriate way to walk down the hall, listen in class, go through the cafeteria line, etc.  These expectations will be revisited throughout the school year.

If a student makes an inappropriate choice in their behavior, they will have the opportunity to reflect on the problem and decide how they want to solve it.  This process of self reflection is called Refocus.  The premise of Refocus is two-fold: 1) We give students the time and tools to solve behavior issues that are interfering with learning; and 2) Refocus does not mean “bad” and there is no punitive action associated with it.

We call the Charles Peck school rules our BIG DO’s and our BIG DON’Ts.

     BIG DO’s:

 1) WORK HARD!   2) LEARN A LOT!    3) HAVE FUN!

Our BIG DO’s reflect who we are and what we’re about.  Students have the right to feel safe at school.  They are entitled to a school where learning is not only rigorous but it is stimulating, thought provoking and, yes, FUN!

We wholeheartedly believe that “No student has the right to interfere with the learning of other students.”  Our school, therefore, also came up with what we call our “line in the sand” rules – behaviors that will not be tolerated at our school.

     The BIG DON’Ts are:

             1) No Violence – Verbal or Physical

             2)   No Drugs, Alcohol, or Weapons

             3)   No disrespect to Adults, Children, or Property

Students who choose to violate these rules will face the possibility of being sent home.  We know that you want the best for your child.  We are partners in helping to develop the life skills that will help your child be a successful member of society.  That is the bottom line in our implementation of the Time To Teach program.

You have our commitment in creating a place where students will receive the very BEST in education and social values.  The reality, however, is that we cannot fully accomplish this without your support.  Successful schools have parent support.  Most unsuccessful schools struggle for the lack of it.  You can support Charles Peck by making education a priority in your home:

· Talk with your children about what they are learning

· Make sure your child gets the sleep and nutrition necessary to feel his/her best

· Keep in touch with your child’s teacher(s)/school
