About Our School
Students attend Sierra Nueva six periods per day, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Bus transportation is available to and from school for both student and their child. A child care center is an integral part of the school providing infant/toddler care and parenting experience for the students. In addition to providing students with regular academic classes and expectant and parenting education, Sierra Nueva is committed to vocational education. The school has a computer lab where students gain extensive word processing and general computer skills. An effort is also made to place students in Regional Opportunnity Program (ROP) and in Outside Work Experience (OWE). Graduating seniors are sometimes concurrently enrolled in an Adult Ed class to provide them with an additional graduation option. A variety of services designed to support expectant and parenting students attending any SJUSD school are made possible by California School Age Family Education (Cal SAFE), a Californian Department of Education grant. Establishing and maintaining an effective referral system and linkages both within the SJUSD and the community are essential to successfully serving these students, their children, and their families. Assistance is provided in dealing with education, health, legal, social service, and personal issues by Sierra Nueva and Cal SAFE and including social work and counseling interns from local universities, Early Childhood Education and Early Head Start staff, and many community programs and agencies such as Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP), Cal Learn, Mentor Moms, Without Regret, Birth & Beyond, Healthy Start, Alliance for Excellence, Building Bridges, OSAPP, Diogenes, and Sacramento County Department of Heman Assistance. Many expectant and parenting students successfully continue or resume their education because of this extensive collaborative approach.
