SIERRA OAKS SCHOOL BEHAVIOR CODE

STUDENT’S RIGHTS

Each student who attends Sierra Oaks School has the following basic rights upon which our behavior code is based:
- An orderly and respectful environment that is conducive to learning.
- A focused work place.
- The opportunity to be addressed courteously.
- Personal safety at all times.

RULES REGARDING STUDENT USE OF SCHOOL GROUNDS & FACILITIES

- Students may not arrive on campus more than 10 minutes before school begins.
- Students must remain in supervised areas before, during and immediately after school:

Play Areas - Students may play on the playground only when an adult is supervising during the before school recess, and recess periods during the school day. Students must stay in the areas designated for their grade levels. Students who are not bus riders must leave the school grounds immediately after dismissal and may not return until 4:00 p.m. Bus riders will be supervised in a designated area while waiting for the bus.
Courtyard - The courtyard is to remain a quiet area and may be used only with teacher permission during recesses. Running and noisy games are not permitted.
Lavatories - Loitering, congregating and game playing are not permitted in the lavatories.
Bike Racks - Students are to park and lock bikes and leave the area immediately.
Library - The library is available to students when supervised and when other classes are not scheduled. Library rules must be observed.
Office - Students may enter office: a.) When tardy, b.) When injured, 3. When given permission by teacher. (office pass)
Teachers’ Room - The teachers’ room is off limits to all students.

Students are not permitted in the area in front of the school or on the parking lot except when entering or leaving the school. Bicycle riders must walk bikes to sidewalk - through South gate (not through parking lot) when leaving school. Students traveling north must walk bicycles on sidewalk until they cross Mills Road at the crosswalk at the north end of the circle drive.

Students must observe the bell schedule by re-directing their activities immediately.

Recess - The recess period is provided for students to tend to special personal needs such as utilizing the restroom and getting a drink of water. It is imperative that each student understands that the bell to line up does not indicate it’s time for a drink or go to the bathroom.

STUDENT RECOGNITION

Rewards
 It is the intention of the teachers and principal of Sierra Oaks School to recognize, praise and reward positive behavior. Student recognition is given for citizenship, attendance, achievement and participation.
Each teacher determines and maintains a positive recognition and behavior management system for his/her classroom with appropriate rewards.

Awards Assemblies
    Students will be rewarded at school awards assemblies for academic and behavioral achievements during the school year in grades second through sixth grade.  All students will have the opportunity to receive awards related to the Sierra Oaks Avid Readers (SOAR) reading incentive program.

ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to attend school daily and arrive on time. Late arrivals must check in through the office to receive a tardy slip. Upon receiving 3 non-excused tardies, students will be assigned to lunch study hall. Additional tardies will receive study hall on a one-to-one basis. Students will not be penalized for late arrival due to medical appointments, illness, or late bus.

SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

- Detention
- Students will be assigned to noon detention if the teacher chooses detention as a consequence for classroom or other misbehavior. Teachers may assign noon detention for the purpose of completing assignments.
On the day of detention students must:
- Report to the person in charge of detention after lunch. A bathroom break will be allowed at the end of detention period prior to student’s return to class.
- Students may be assigned appropriate tasks during detention time. These may include writing school rules or additional assignments from teachers.

OTHER DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

Other consequences for misbehaviors may be arranged by teacher and/or parents with the approval of the principal. These may include assignments of specific tasks, i.e. picking up papers, writing letters of apology, etc.
In addition, participation in certain activities may be withheld. These may include assemblies, programs and field trips and/or other special activities. Withholding of field trips will take place only after warnings have been given and the student has continued his/her undesirable behavior.
The district policies will be followed for serious violations which may involve suspension of expulsion. (See student handbook.)


STUDENT ATTITUDES

- Students must speak and act respectfully to all adults. Vulgar language and profanity will not be permitted.
- Students must show consideration for the rights, feelings and safety of others.
- Students shall not use racial, ethnic, religious, handicapped, sexual, or any slur which demeans others or causes a disruption of the educational process (Board Policy 5161.01).

STUDENT SAFETY

- Students must walk in the halls.
- Students must not engage in any activity of unnecessary roughness that could cause bodily injury. All games of this type are not permitted regardless of name.
- Fence climbing is not allowed. No student is to leave school grounds for any reason.
- Softball and football equipment may not be used except when directly supervised.
- School buildings may not be used for ball walls.
- Balls may not be kicked on the blacktop except in designated areas.
- Students are not permitted to fight under any circumstances. This includes “play fighting”.
- No chasing or tag games are allowed.
- Primary students may not use the intermediate playground equipment during school hours.
- Intermediate students may not use the primary playground equipment during school hours.
- No running or pushing on or around playground equipment.


EQUIPMENT AND GAME RULES

Swing Rules

a.    Students may not stand on the swing seats or climb on the chains or pipes.
b.    Students must face toward the school and swing without twisting or weaving.
c.    Each turn consists of
-    2 get-going swings
-    20 full swings (back and forth)
-    2 stopping swings
d.    Students may not jump off the swing to dismount.
e.    Students waiting to swing must wait to the side.
f.    No one is to run or play in front or behind the swings.

General Bar Rules

a.    No sitting or standing on top of bars.
b.    No dismounting in an upside-down position.
c.    No more students than it is safe at a time.
d.    Take turns by counting slowly to fifty for a new turn.

Overhead Ladders and Ring Equipment

a.    Move in a direction from north to south on the primary equipment.
b.    Move in a clockwise direction to the circular ladder.
c.    Only one student at a time on the “Swing Out”.
d.    Move in a direction toward the school on intermediate equipment.

Tetherball

a.    Server decides direction of serve or side of court.
b.    Receiver takes the other side.
c.    Players must stay in circle.
d.    Balls may not be touched twice before crossing player line.
e.    No player may touch the rope.
f.    No player may touch the pole.
g.    No player may step out of the circle.
h.    No special rules can be called.

Four Square

a.    The serve must be fair and easily played or it is played over.
b.    Each player is to play for himself/herself. Teaming-up is not permitted and is a foul.
c.    Interference is the only cause for a replay. The serve is taken over.

Basketball

a.    All safety and fair play rules are to be followed.
b.    Deliberate fouls must not occur.
c.    When a player dribbles the ball and stops, the player must pass or shoot.
d.    An arm’s distance must be given to the player with the ball when passing or shooting.
e.    There are no jump balls and/or struggling over the ball.

Soccer

a.    All safety and fair play rules are to be followed.
b.    Students may only play soccer on the soccer field and with adult supervision.

    

SCHOOL AND PERSONAL PROPERTY

Students must show respect for school property and the personal property of others. Students may not deface books, desks or any other school property.
RULES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE WAITING FOR
AFTER-SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION

Students are to report to the primary playground immediately after dismissal from class. Students should check-in with the Recreations Assistants who will take role. Students must remain in this area until they are called to get on their bus.
Book bags and lunch pails are to be placed in neat rows at the edge of the blacktop according to bus number.
Students must not congregate or play on the grassy area between the classrooms.
Students must use primary bathrooms. Upper grade bathrooms are off limits at this time.
Students must not use the hallways until they are called to line up for their bus.
All school playground rules are for the safety of children and for the purpose of clearing the area in front of the classrooms so that teachers may work in their rooms after school.


CAFETERIA

The cafeteria should be a pleasant place for all. Running, loud noises, and disorderly conduct will not be allowed.
Throwing, shooting or playing with food is not allowed.
Students are expected to be responsible for leaving their area in a clean and orderly condition.
Students will sit at tables designated for their classrooms.
Students must be quiet during announcements and dismissal.
    
Consequences for Poor Cafeteria Behavior

A class or individual may be detained from going to recess if their behavior does not meet acceptable standards. Individuals who consistently cause their class to lose privileges will be isolated temporarily from the class.


DRESS CODE (For Middle School Dress Code:  See "Middle School")

California Education Code and school district policy place responsibility for dress codes with the local school administrator. Over the years, in consultation with teachers and parents, rules governing dress have become fewer and fewer, until today we have just a few which we feel are very important to maintaining a healthy and stable educational attitude and climate of productiveness during school hours.
We depend heavily on parent support in the implementation of these rules and appreciate that support immensely.
 
- Pupils must be neat and clean when entering school daily. California Education Code
- Shoes and socks must be worn by students at all times. During warm weather, sandals secured by straps are acceptable.  Roller Shoes are unsafe and not acceptable.
- Halter tops, spaghetti strap dresses, cutoffs, muscle shirts, bare midriff tops and tank tops may not be worn. Other similar garments, regardless of name, may not be worn.
- Fad clothing occasionally becomes a problem. If this occurs, the fad items will be banned.
- Shorts may be worn to school. However, the length may be no shorter than the student’s fingertips when the arm rests at the side in an extended position.
- Dresses, culottes or other garments may be no shorter than the permitted length for shorts.
- T-shirts with offensive wording, slogans about violence, drugs or alcohol and tobacco are not appropriate.
- Any clothing considered to be gang-related is not appropriate.

In all instances, we will be happy to meet with parents and discuss further our reasoning as it applies in any particular case.

- No animals allowed
- No skating / skateboarding or rollerblading allowed
- No golfing allowed
- No glass containers or alcoholic beverages allowed
- No smoking, San Juan is a smoke and drug free environment
