Summer School

Update: The bus route for students going to Mesa Verde from San Juan HS has been relocated to San Simeon Drive and Mariposa Avenue. This location is beside San Juan HS a block past the back parking area.
Elementary Summer School Programs typically operate for five weeks providing a total of 103 hours of instruction. Elementary Summer School is an intervention program offered to students who are not currently meeting grade level standards. Curriculum used during Summer School is California State Standards aligned and supports regular year instruction.
Elementary Summer School offers the following options:
1) Intervention will be offered to incoming 1st-6th grade students who are not currently meeting grade level standards, as determined by the 2nd trimester report card. All students who have received 1’s and/or 2’s in reading and/or mathematics are eligible for enrollment in the intervention program.
2) EL Instruction will be offered to incoming 1st-6th grade English Learner students who scored Beginning or Early Intermediate on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). Students who scored intermediate on the CELDT will be placed in the Intervention Program.
3) Reading Camp will be provided to one class of incoming 1st or 2nd grade students at all Title I Schools. Students are typically referred to the program for additional help and support in reading. Additional camps may be purchased using site funds at any Title I and non-Title I school.

Middle Summer School Programs typically operate for five weeks providing a total of 112 hours of instruction.
Extended Middle Summer School Programs are offered at Will Rogers and Jonas Salk High Tech Academy, and typically operate for six weeks providing a total of 135 hours of instruction.
Middle Summer School offers the following options:
1) Intervention in reading and math is offered to current 6th or 7th grade students who are not meeting grade level requirements. Curriculum used during Summer School is California State Standards aligned and supports regular year instruction. Current 5th grade students who will be attending a Middle School in the 2009-2010 school year are eligible to attend a Summer School intervention program hosted at a Middle School campus. Current 5th or 6th grade students who are enrolled in a K-8 school, and will be attending Summer School should enroll to attend a Summer School hosted at an Elementary campus.
2) EL Instruction will be offered to incoming 6th- 8th grade English Learner students who scored Beginning or Early Intermediate on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). Students who scored intermediate on the CELDT will be placed in the Intervention Program
3) Pre-Algebra/Algebra Academy is offered to middle school *students currently in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade that just completed a Pre-Algebra/Algebra course with no less than a “C-“, and would benefit from additional practice. This class will provide the opportunity for students to improve skills and advance to the next math class in the fall. Curriculum used during the Pre-Algebra/Algebra Academies is adapted from the same materials used for these courses during regular year instruction.
*Current Pre-Algebra/Algebra teacher recommendation and signature required.
4) Academic Make Up is offered to students currently in the 6th or 7th grade who are maintaining grade level requirements, but have failed one or more *classes. Curriculum used in the Academic Make Up program is California State Standards aligned and addresses English Language Arts, Mathematics, and important strategic study skills through the implementation of hands on projects. * If the only class failed is math, the student must retake the math class in the fall.

High Summer School Programs typically operate two three week sessions, providing a total of 150 hours of instruction. Curriculum used during High School Summer School is adapted from the same materials used for courses during regular year instruction.
High Summer School offers the following options:
1) 9th Grade Academy is offered to incoming 9th grade students who could benefit from high school transition support, study skills, and additional practice in core strategies for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Curriculum used during Summer School is California State Standards aligned and supports regular year instruction. Students that successfully complete both sessions of the course will receive a total of 10 elective credits.
2) High School Course Offerings have been reduced in response to state level budget reductions and restrictions. Classes will be offered to address the needs of students that have not taken or passed the California High School Exit Exam. In addition classes will be offered to students that are at risk of not meeting grade level standards and graduation requirements, and/or need access to courses during Summer School to maintain eligibility in a specialized program (e.g. AVID, IB, Band etc…).
Each high school principal has approved the courses which students may take over the summer to advance towards graduation. Factors such as departmental prerequisites or master schedule considerations affect these decisions. San Juan Unified School District reserves the right to cancel, consolidate and/or relocate scheduled classes due to insufficient student enrollment.
Student Eligibility- Priority enrollment shall be given to students currently enrolled in the San Juan USD in the following order:
1) Non-graduating seniors who need to access CAHSEE intervention courses, or course credits to ensure high school graduation.
2) Current 11th grade students who need credit recovery options necessary for high school graduation.
3) Current 9th-11th grade students who are deficient in credits, have an F grade in a core content area or who have not passed the CAHSEE and are not on track for high school graduation.
4) Current 9th-11th grade students who need to take a course to maintain enrollment in a specialized program (e.g. AVID, IB, Band etc.)
5) Current 8th grade students in need of remedial support in English Language Arts or Math or who have failed one or more classes* during the 8th grade year. * If the only class failed is math, the student must retake the math class in the fall.
6) Current 9th-11th grade students seeking acceleration or grade improvement, on a first come first served basis as space is available.

Non-Public Student Enrollment
To the extent that space is available after SJUSD students have enrolled, summer school courses may be open to Non-SJUSD students who reside within the SJUSD boundaries and meet priority enrollment criteria 1-3.
