Bus Transportation at San Juan Unified School District

On April 28, 2009, San Juan Unified Board Policy (BP 3541 Transportation Routes and Services) was revised.

Board Policy BP 3541

The Transportation Department will use the following distance as a basis for identifying service and non-service school sites:

Grades Kindergarten through three:    1 mile

Grades four through six:                   1 mile

Grades seven through eight:             2 miles

Grades nine through 12:                   3 miles

The distance is measured by the shortest walking route by surface walkway to the closest access to the school property.

Unless road or other conditions make it inadvisable, buses shall be routed so that they pass within one mile of the residence of each pupil who resides beyond the non-service area from the school to which the student is assigned.

The Superintendent or designee may authorize transportation within the non-service area when special problems or hazards exist.

No bus shall be operated for any transportation unless a sufficient number of children are entitled to transportation under the above regulations. The Superintendent or designee may designate transportation non-service areas when existing ridership is less than 10 riders per run. When a non-service area is determined and transportation is no longer provided, San Juan Unified School District may offer affected families options on a case-by-case basis including, but not limited to:

  a.   Intra-district transfer to another school

  b.   Additional placement options, and / or

  c.   Transportation reimbursement

The Superintendent or designee shall design school routes and stops so as to limit the need for red light crossovers.

The district does not provide transportation to the following schools, or to schools outside students’ regular attendance area that are selected through open enrollment.
