We take the safety of our students seriously before, during and after school. In an effort to keep you informed and protect the safety of all of our students we want to make you aware of a serious situation.
Recently, we were notified of allegations that a Bridges After-School staff member was having inappropriate contact with one of our students off campus. We took immediate action to remove the staff member from the school environment and notified local law enforcement officials who began an investigation.
Bridges After-School is a San Juan Unified program which provides organized after-school activities and child-care. Many of the program staff members are employees of the Mission Oaks Recreation and Parks District. All employees of the program undergo a background screening which includes fingerprinting and a criminal history check.
Both school and park and recreation district staff are cooperating with law enforcement officials as the investigation continues. Please know that we will share as much information as we can while protecting the investigative process and the privacy rights of our students and staff.
This alleged incident serves as an important reminder for families to talk with their students about what to do if an adult is behaving in a way that makes them uncomfortable. You can find helpful tips for how to have this type of conversation on the San Juan Unified web site at http://www.sanjuan.edu/talk. As always, it is very important that any suspicious activity be reported to school or law enforcement officials immediately.
If you have any questions or concerns about this incident or your student please do not hesitate to contact the school office at (916) 971-7318. Thank you for helping to make Starr King K-8 a safe place for all students.
