API scores and AYP status released
Three schools reconstituted by San Juan Unified last year showed significant improvements with the release of Academic Performance Index scores and updated Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) data on Aug. 31. Several other schools also showed impressive gains.

“What is most important is not the fear of Federal or state sanctions, but rather a moral imperative to have all students learn at high level so they graduate from high school with viable options. This is what the San Juan Unified School District is committed to do," said Superintendent Steven Enoch.

Howe Avenue Elementary saw a jump in its API score by 30 points while Encina Preparatory High School exited program improvement status after both underwent modified reconstitutions last year. Reconstitution is an option available to schools, struggling under provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, that allows for them to be restructured and enhanced. The process included staff applying or opting-in to work at a specific site, significant staff development, and facilities improvements.

Jonas Salk High-Tech Academy underwent a more intensive form of reconstitution receiving an infusion of technology throughout the school and curriculum. The school’s API scores jumped 33 points this year after the addition of 400 laptop computers, a wireless networking environment, and new teachers and administrators.

Other San Juan Unified Schools also have reason to be proud. Bella Vista High School is the district’s first high school to reach the state goal of an 800 API score after leaping 34 points to 807. Kingswood Elementary, a school labeled as program improvement, saw its scores go up 34 points this year. Several of the district’s highest performing schools such as Del Paso Manor, Mariemont, and Green Oaks continued to improve their already impressive API scores.

"As always the results reflect mixed indicators. We have schools that are up, and some that are down. I always remind staff not to despair too much when a score drops, or celebrate too wildly when they are up, as one year swings are not sufficient for such responses," said Enoch.
