Letter from the Principal - October 20, 2009

Dear Parents,

            I
am sure that all of you have noticed the new look to Edison!  I have been pushing (gently yet
persistently) for the school to receive a new paint job since returning to
Edison.  We were scheduled to have
the school painted during the summer of 2010.  However, when the painters came out to see about touching up
the school in several locations the lead painter spoke with me about trying to
move the painting job forward.  We
were extremely excited to learn that the new paint job was approved and that it
would begin immediately!  I have
heard many positive comments regarding the new color scheme.  We did stop work on the back of the MP
room which is why it has been only partially painted for awhile now.  I recently met with the lead painter
and think we have an exciting new design for the large area on the back of the
MP room.  I have wanted to increase
school spirit and have always thought it would be a perfect place for a tiger
and the slogan “Home of the Tigers.”
The front of the school is very important as it is the first thing that
people see as they enter our school.
I have plans for the plants because the current ones are not
attractive.  We are also looking
into having an area on the wall as you enter the school for a mural.

            We
are also making great strides in our Field of Dreams project.  I have been working on this project for
the last 6 months with Lou Fifer.
Lou is from the Point West Rotary Club and has been instrumental in
bringing many things to Edison.  He
works very closely with me in the TEES Tutoring Program, organized and funded a
6
th grade field trip to the Bay Area, has had his band perform at
the school, and the list could go on and on!  Lou and I visited many local fields for ideas and are very
excited about what the fields will eventually look like.  Lou and I met with representatives from
Kaiser a few weeks ago and we are hoping that we will be able to partner
with
them in this project.  We are
trying to build 2 baseball fields, 2 soccer fields, a flag football field, and
a track.  All of which will be top
of the line!  This project will
take the entire year but it will be worth the wait!

            The
San Juan Unified District’s Board of Education has proposed that Edison become
a dual immersion school beginning next year.  The school is not being considered for closure even though
we have a very low student enrollment.
A dual immersion school is one where students will become fluent in two
languages (English and Spanish) by the time they leave our school.  There are several dual immersion
schools in the Sacramento area and all are extremely popular.  Our students will benefit greatly from
learning two languages at this age.
Many countries around the world have all of their students learn two
languages in elementary school.  Young
children learn a second language much easier than we do as adults.  The board has not finalized this plan
yet and I will keep you informed as I learn more of the details.  Please feel free to see me if you have
any questions or comments regarding this proposal.

Thank you,

Mr. Lindeman
