Celebrate Earth Day at Koobs Nature Area

Koobs Nature Area Koobs Nature Area will be hosting a special Earth Day celebration on April 22 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. This free event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael and will feature food, tables with environmental information, learning stations and hands-on activities. Several organizations will be on site, including the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Sierra Club, Effie Yeaw Nature Center, California Montessori Project, Boy Scout Troop 55, Troop 3191 Daisy Scouts, Sacramento Audubon Society and others.

“We’re looking forward to a wonderful event where we will have many community organizations information and activities and children,” said Wayne Lang of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael. “We hope that families and children will find this a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day.”

The nature area is a 4.7-acre parcel of land that is a treasure trove of diverse ecosystems. It is located at 5325 Engle Road in Carmichael along the east driveway of La Sierra Community Center. Koobs Nature Area is open to the public once a month where visitors can take part in several outdoor activities like birdwatching and hiking. Currently, the area is open on the second Saturday of each month from May to October from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Kiwanis Club hopes to increase access by opening on more days in the future.

Koobs Nature Area began several years ago with the vision of science teacher Earl Koobs to provide a place for environmental study and served as outdoor learning for the adjacent high school and elementary school. Students learned through guided tours as well as projects and interaction with the diverse ecosystems and biodiversity found in the area. Koobs’ vision has been carried forward through the dedication, commitment, and hard work of local resident Linda Jones and the support of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael, Foothill Key Club, Del Campo Key Club and other community groups.
