ASB Activities October 11, 2008 - "Tune Into Love"; Homecoming This year's homecoming theme was Tune Into Love-a musically romantic evening that Student Government members worked extra hard to accomplish. The week was busy, filled with constant class meetings of float assembly, and preparations for decorations, food, and the first rally of the year. The time and effort that both ASB and class officers put in were all worth it in the end, and the success of Homecoming 2008 was clear. Despite losing the Homecoming football game, El Camino spirits were still high as the float parade rounded the corners of the track. The float themes were all connected to the general "music" theme of homecoming. The senior float was all about country (and included a live performance by Hailey Busath), the junior float was disco-oriented (taking first place, and featuring a John Travolta-inspired dance by Jordan Ferris), the sophomore float was soda shop (with a fabulous fifties diner feel) and the freshman float was pure rock n' roll (featuring a fabulous rock band). The crowd was clearly impressed. Student Government proved their dedication all week long. Rally run-through was on Wednesday, and dance decorations were early Saturday morning. Everyone pulled their weight to make sure that the students at El Camino High School had the time of their lives.
This year, some of the students in the class had a special opportunity to attend the 45th High School Reunion of El Camino's Class of 1963. We were honored to have the chance to partake in such a momentous event, and we learned a great deal about the history of our school. There were many wonderful stories throughout the night; it was an evening we will not soon be forgetting! Thank you, Dan Cole, 1963 Senior Class Treasurer, for inviting us to spend the evening with you and your classmates. Thanks also to Marissa Buschow, Shelby Carney, Jill Price, Erlin Sweeney, Jane O'Neil, Jill Syftestad, Nardos Takele, Chantel Lester, and Kirsten Vest, for sharing their El Camino spirit with the Class of '63. Special thanks to Mr. Ahlgren and the Yearbook class of 2008 for donating the Aerie, Volume 58, to the Student Government class. We scanned some images from last year's book and from the 1963 Aerie for a slideshow presentation titled, "El Camino High School: Then and Now." We played the slideshow at the reunion and the alumni enjoyed it tremendously.
August 4-6, 2008 - Marin Headlands The retreat serves dual purposes. Firstly, it is a bonding experience for all of the new and old student government officers. With about fifty percent turnover in the class per annum, the retreat is an important opportunity for students to form the personal and working relationships that will benefit the class throughout the year. Secondly, it is a planning pow-wow! During the retreat, students plan Freshman Orientation and the Back to School Dance. Through the planning process, they learn Robert's Rules of Order, and they begin to get a sense of the expectations and responsibilities of an ASB officer.
