March 15, 2010

I can't believe it has been a month since I have been able to update our little webpage; so much to do as we finished out the 2nd trimester with numerous assessments, activities, and projects. I am looking forward to meeting with many of you this week during conference time. If you did not already request a conference and would like to schedule one after viewing your child's report card (they should go out by the end of the week), please call or send me an e-mail and we will set up a day and time. For the most part, the students are doing a fabulous job despite the rigorous curriculum. It is so important that your child attends every day as so much of what we do is difficult to make-up or send home such as class discussions, group work, Mountain Language/Mountain Math review activities, etc.

We were able to take a little break and enjoy an awesome SCUBA presentation as part of our study on habitats. Mr. Wilson, a certified SCUBA instructor, visited our class last Wednesday and got us very excited about life under the sea. As part of our Silent Auction package, Mr. Wilson is putting together a very valuable SCUBA Open Water package from Sacramento's own Scuba World. We will be decorating a photo album to go along with the package for the lucky duck (lucky fish!) who wins our class auction item. This is all happening at Open House on Wednesday night, March 24. Please note that this is an early dismissal day- 12:40 for all 1st -6th graders.
This is a different dismissal time from conference days when children will be dismissed at 11:45.

Congratulations are in order for a number of students who were surprised with honors last week.
Hip Hooray for our top three Read Across Oakview readers: Dylan (Top Dog!), Faith, and Samuel. They will all get a chance to throw wet sponges at our Principal! (The where and when to be announced later)

Last Tuesday seven students from our class, along with 25 other Oakview students, were called out of class and told to go see the 6th grade teacher with a very intimidating name, Mr Kill! When they walked into the room, they were astonished to see a whole ice cream party set up in their honor. Mr. Kill's class had won the ice cream party with the most coins from the coin drive and decided to donate it to deserving primary students who go over the top to do their best.
In our class, these seven students were recognized for the awesome extra credit work they do:
Ryan, Faith, Dylan, Aleena, Caitlin, Colby, and Andrea

Speaking of doing their best, four students raced to the top of the track and finished the second trimester of Accelerated Reader by reaching their reading goals. The trophies go to Faith (174%),
Andrea (133%), David (151%) and Julien (100%). Although others were close, many cars got stalled at the middle of the track when their owners forgot to fuel up with great books! Please read carefully the Accelerated Reader Update that will go home this week. It will include a way for you to monitor your child's progress online. We are well practiced in reading, taking quizzes, and doing projects now so that there is no excuse for everyone NOT to meet their goals by the end of the 3rd trimester. I have promised a very, very big reading trophy to the racer at the end of the year who read the most and passed the most quizzes with the highest percentage of points. The win-win is that everybody who reads is a winner.

Kudos to Christopher for being our Star of the Week this week. He takes the leader's place from Zachary who reigned last week and Dylan who lead the week before! Congratulations to ALL!

Yearbooks are still on sale for the low, low price of $10. We have a new Yearbook Editor who is phenomenal! You won't be disappointed if you buy one but I'm pretty sure you will be disappointed if you do not. It promises to be the BEST ever and there will be very limited ones available after they come out.

As always, thank you for all you do-the Solar System Dioramas are AMAZING! Please call or e-mail anytime with questions or concerns.
