Welcome to Ms. Russell's Learning Center Class  at Woodside Elementary K-8 School!

What's new in the Learning Center for School Year 2009-2010?  Well, we're launching a very promising new program to help students increase reading skills!  It's called READ 180.  It's research-based, it's fast paced, and it's loaded with technology!  There's a class for students in grades 4 through 6 and another program for kids in grades 7 and 8.

After we spend the first few weeks learning the routines and equipment students will be using, we'll begin following a regular routine that begins and ends each day with whole-group, teacher-directed instruction. In between whole-group lessons, students will break into three small groups and rotate among three stations.  One station is Small-Group Differentiated Instruction.  Groups of no more than 7 students will work with the teacher on phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, spelling, and grammar.

A second station is Reading and Writing Skills Practice.  At this station, students will work on building reading fluency and comprehension through independent reading and/or by listening to CD's of professionals reading fluently while the students read along in their copies of the text.

The station that students probably enjoy the most is the Instructional Software station.  Students log onto a computer that has lessons that are individualized specifically for them based on tests they took on at the beginning of the year.  They get to read, take quizzes, and even record their own voices reading aloud!

I think students are going to love this new program and are going to make some great gains in their reading skills!

The Learning Center is a welcoming place to learn!
