What’s New in Room 22?
Progress Notices
Progress notices are being sent out this week. If you receive a progress notice for your child, the information is designed to help direct your focus when working with your child. The goal is to spend some extra time with your child in the deficient areas to help bring them up to grade level standards before the end of the trimester. The grade on the progress notice is NOT a set grade and can easily change before the trimester ends. Conferences
The main focus of the second trimester conference (March 17-19) is to meet with parents of students who are NOT proficient in standards, not making appropriate progress, or new students.
If you do not receive a progress note, that means your child is either meeting standards or is making excellent progress towards them, therefore a conference would not necessary. If you would like to meet to talk about your child anyway, feel free to request a conference time when I start scheduling them in March.

Writing
We are learning how to write letters. Every letter must include the date, greeting, body, and closing. In conjunction with letter writing, we are focusing on writing topic sentences with support sentences, followed by a closing statement. Writing letters to relatives and friends is a great way to reinforce the skills that are being taught in class! We have become pen pals with another second grade class at Mission Ave. The class is very excited to send and receive mail!
Math Maniacs
We are regrouping, regrouping, regrouping! Many students still have the urge to invert the numbers when they do not have enough ones to subtract, instead of regrouping from the ten’s column. Check in with your child to see if they are fully conceptualizing how the decomposition of numbers work. We have also moved onto the exploration of numbers into the thousand. We are learning how to decompose them in expanded notation.
Science and Social Studies
Pebbles, Sand, and Silt is our next unit of study. It is a series of investigations designed to provide experiences to heighten students’ awareness of rocks as earth materials, natural resources, and fossils.
For social studies we are focusing on A Working World in which we will learn about our interdependence on community workers, and the process of how goods and services get to buyers and sellers. Action Teams
Join an Action team and help shape Deterding’s future! If you are interested in more information or joining, please contact Sandy Rangel or Terry Minton. Wish List
Our class is in need of more Clorox wipes, store items (new or gently used), starburst, sharpen pencils, and eraser tops. If you are able to donate any of these items, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!
