Room 19 is reading better and better! We are using LANGUAGE! a new intervention program for students who scored Far Below Basic on the state reading tests. This program covers all of the facets of language arts--phonics, decoding, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, comprehension, and writing.
But, the most critical part of improving reading abilities is PRACTICE. We read to ourselves in class for a short period every day and Room 19 students are assigned 30 minutes of independent reading at home every night. THIS IS IMPORTANT HOMEWORK! Each student has books at his or her reading level that can be taken home for reading homework. Or, you can read with your student letting him or her read the parts that he or she can.
Most students would like to someday go back into a regular education classroom. Improved reading is how they are going to get there.
