Greetings.

Welcome to Mr. Shunk's 2009-2010 web page. This year I am teaching all 7th grade classes; Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and Intervention. The Algebra class and Pre-Algebra classes are being taught out of Holt 2 and McDougal Littell California Algebra texts, respectively. The main emphasis for each of these classes is for all instruction to be based firmly on The California Math Standards. Each lesson is designed to meet one or more of these basic standards. If students pay attention and work hard, they should do well on both the California STAR tests and the California High School Exit Exam.

My Intervention class is for those students who need additional help in Pre-Algebra. We are using the Holt 2 curricullum. While using this curricullum, I am implimenting strategies suggested by the U.S. Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse published in April of 2009. These strategies specifically apply to Response to Intervention, our district-wide intervention program. During the year we will emphasize rational numbers, especially decimal and percent analysis. A major issue will be to insure that all students are fluent in their basic arithmetic facts. The class will also preteach upcoming lessons and reteach difficult lessons. 

Over the last 12 years I have seen tremendous growth made by our Sylvan students. I am sure that this year's students will continue the tradition of solid, steady growth that has become a hallmark of our school's Math Department.
