*Our Reading Theme for the year is - "Citrus Heights - Where Reading is King." Each Wednesday will be Royal Wednesday and students will be able to wear tshirts with an image of a king/queens/princess .
*Students must read 3 books / 300 pages of pleasure reading at home EACH MONTH - STUDENTS NEED TO READ ONE HOUR EACH NIGHT
*Each month the top 3 readers will select a free book from the Scholastic Book order. TOP WINNERS FOR March WERE KATIE, SKY & KEITH
*Students will choose one of their 3 books for a book report/project. - ONE OF THE BOOKS MUST BE ON THE HOLOCAUST.
THE BOOK PROJECT FOR APRIL - KITE (information was sent out attached to the Gold Card) - PROJECT IS TO CREATE A KITE - FRONT HAS A SCENE FROM THE BOOK DRAWN BY THE STUDENTS IN COLORED PENCIL/MARKER AND TITLE/AUTHOR OF BOOK. Students may make their own kite OR just cover a store bought kite in white paper. I will provide the white paper AFTER THE SPRING BREAK.
3 Books/300 Pages as well as Book Report is due Friday, May 2nd

Morning Math - We just finished our chapter on Ordered Pairs and will start on Geometry after Spring Break
Regular Math - Students are starting CHAPTER 14 - Dividing with Decimals
STUDENTS WHO ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH THEIR MATH FACTS WILL HAVE TROUBLE WITH THIS UNIT. PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD PRACTICE THEIR MATH FACT FOR AT LEAST 10 MIN EACH NIGHT.
*ALL MATH STUDENTS WILL BE TAKING DAILY TIMED MATH FACTS QUIZES. AS THEY MASTER EACH OPERATION (+ - X, DIVIDE) THEY EARN A "KEY TO THE KINGDOM" AND A PENCIL FOR THAT OPERATION. WHEN THEY RECEIVE ALL 4 KEYS - THEY BECOME A "MATH WIZ"
**IF YOU LOOK ON THE MATH PAGE UNDER "MY RESOURCES" I WILL BE ADDING PICTURES OF THE CHARTS WE USE IN CLASS. STUDENTS ALSO HAVE COPIES OF THESE IN THEIR BLUE NOTEBOOK. BOTH ARE GREAT RESOURCES IF THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR HOMEWORK.
Unit: MATTER -
This unit is divided into 3 sections. Matter, Physical Change and Chemical Change. For section three the students will be learning about Chemical Changes of Matter. By the end they should be able to
*know that during a chemical change that the substance looses its properties,
*give examples of a chemical change
*know how to tell a chemical change has taken place
*Explain the difference between a physical and chemical change
*Unit - POETRY
We will be starting a POETRY unit after Spring Break.
*Students will be reading poems and writing about the authors purpose for writing the poem.
*Students will also be learning about poetic devices (alliteration, rhyme, simile, metaphor... and why poets choose to use these in their poems.
*Students will learn different styles of poems (haiku, free verse, limerick...) and write their own poems in the various style
*Students will collect poetry that interests them.
AVID / Social Studies:
After Spring Break we will spend a week on Chapter 8 - Facing Slavery, before moving on to Chapter 9 - Colonial Williamsburg. In Chapter 9 students will do an individual project that depicts life at this time. They will research how the item was made and used during colonial time. We will present our projects to the class. Past projects have included - quilting, embroidery, writing tools, food, clothing, music...) Information will go out the last week in April.
