    Mission

     To ensure all English learner students develop proficiency in English while maintaining their linguistic and cultural identity, and to engage educators in professional development to support the academic and linguistic needs of  English learner students.

     

    Overview

    The English Learner and Multicultural Department provides resources, programs and services for English learner (EL) students that support acquisition of the English language using standards-based academic content. The programs and activities offered through the English Learner and Multicultural Department are aligned with the San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD) Mission, Common Core Standards and the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).

    The San Juan Unified School District presently serves 5,518 English Learners. This population comes from over 72 different languages. English Language Learners in the San Juan Unified School District are placed into immersion and mainstream programs taught in English. Parents may request placement into dual language immersion programs by contacting the English Learner Program Manager.  For a list of schools with translation/interpretation requirement go to this link (15 percent schools).

    Services and Supports

     

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

    The SJUSD staff works closely with school sites to ensure all students receive English Language Development (ELD) instruction during the school day. Typically, students receive a minimum of 30 minutes per day of English language support. Additional supplemental supports for long-term English learners are also available.

    TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

    The EL professional development team offers training, coaching, and resources to teachers.

    SCHOOL COMMUNITY RESOURCE ASSISTANTS & REFUGEE SPECIALIST

    Staff has been hired to support our Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, and Spanish speaking families and students.  They provide resources and serve as a bridge between school, families, district andcommunity based organizations.

    HOME ONLINE MULTI-MEDIA EDUCATION (HOME) PROGRAM

    The HOME program is a computer loan program which provides a Chromebook or iPad for eligible students to support their acquisition of English at home.  Eligible students are determined by years in the United States, English proficiency levels, and family commitment.

    INTERPRETING/TRANSLATION SUPPORT

    The EL department is committed to supporting our bilingual families by providing, to the extent possible, translation and interpreting services.
