Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Rachel Schottky

I am Mrs. Schottky, and I love to teach!  I have been a teacher for a long time: 30 years and counting, in many ways and in many grades.  I began my career as a 5th grade teacher in Roseville, fresh out of college!  After that first year, I was transferred to another school to teach 6th grade.  Then, thinking I might change career focus, I took a year off to attend graduate school at Princeton Theological Seminary. Feeling led to return to the public school system, I returned to Roseville, where I taught for 7 more years, teaching 5 more years of 5th grade, then 2 years of kindergarten.  My first child was born in May of 1993, so I gave up full-time teaching to be a stay-at-home mom.  When my son started preschool, I taught preschool at the same place.  Then, 3 years later when my daughter was born, taught preschool again.  Then, I took a position as a Children's Ministry Director for almost 2 years.  When both my children were full-time students (1st and 4th grades), I began guest teaching just at their school (Green Oaks Fundamental).  There I remained for the next 11 years, substitute teaching in all grades, even taking on certain classes for a couple months at a time.  I also took on the GATE program.  When my daughter was a senior in high school, and my son a Junior in college, I went back to the classroom full-time.  I have been at Ottomon for 3 years, teaching 1st, 2nd/3rd and 3rd grade.  When we decided to become an Artful Learning School, I knew I was at the right place, as I have always loved involving my students in music, drama and art.  I am excited to be a part of a school that takes seriously the necessity of using the entire brain to teach core curriculum - both the academic and the creative parts. I want for my students to come alive!
