Communication Work Experience Internship Program

Multiple paid positions are available and will be filled ASAP.The importance and role of high-quality communication efforts continues to grow within school systems as we work to better engage our families and communities to improve student outcomes. San Juan Unified’s communication internship offers aspiring professionals an opportunity to gain real-world skills while exploring potential careers within education.
The internship experience is customized to meet the needs of the intern as well as the department by identifying areas of strength and desired areas of growth before assigning projects. Interns within the communication office are treated as a part of the team and contribute to social media, video, marketing, community engagement, crisis response and other projects. Interns are also invited to learn with the team and are afforded opportunities to take part in local professional development experiences as appropriate.Interested candidates are invited to share their background with us at any time as we may add interns at any time depending on capacity and need.
Candidate EligibilityCandidates for an intern position must attend an accredited post-secondary education institution or have graduated within the last 12 months and focused their studies on communication including public relations, multimedia production or journalism. Participation in an internship for credit program is highly encouraged but not required. Recent graduates looking to expand their experience will also be considered. Internship activities will be designed to help participants reach their next professional goal. All candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and pass a criminal background check.
Measures of SuccessInterns are evaluated on their ability to meet mutually agreed upon goals, specific project milestones/deadlines and evidence of growth during their experience. Evaluations will given in alignment with any for credit internship requirements but shall be no fewer than twice every six months. Interns who receive positive evaluations may be invited to continue their experience beyond the term of a for-credit internship program.
Hours and CompensationInterns are typically asked to contribute at least 10 to 20 hours per week. Experiences can be designed with as few as 5 hours per week to meet specific needs. Occasional overtime and weekend work is possible depending on specific projects and need. Interns are compensated $11 per hour, receive mileage reimbursement for travel related to assigned duties and may receive paid professional development opportunities.
