During Hand Drum Class, students at Howe Avenue Elementary School have the opportunity to play several different types of drums from around the world. These drums include the Djembe, Dumbek, Conga, Snare Drum and the Drum Set. Students also perform as groups several times a year, playing original compositions that are based on traditional African, East Indian, Latin American and Middle Eastern rhythms.
Through the use of the drums and the compositions, each student is able to express feelings and emotions, all the while developing eye-hand coordination, building self-esteem, working with others and coming to appreciate different cultures.
