• Course Descriptions

     

    Beginning Band (MYP Year 1A Music)

    No experience required. Students will have the opportunity to choose from flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, tuba and electric bass (must have and use own amp in class). Students will learn to read, write, and speak music. Students will be using book 1 of Ed Sueta Band Method and/or Standard of Excellence book 1. Students are required to participate in at least 1 formal concert.

     

    Beginning Strings (MYP Year 1A Music)- Not a class offered yet!!! 

    No experience required. Students will have the opportunity to choose from violin, viola, or cello. Students will learn to read, write, and speak music. Students will be using book 1 of All for Strings. Students are required to participate in at least 1 formal concert.

     

    Choir  (MYP 1, 2, and 3 Music)

    Students will learn basic note reading skills. Students will learn to sing in an ensemble to produce a common goal. Students will refine the following skills:

    ·      Students will perform in various languages. To sing in union, 2-part, 3-part harmonies

    ·      Learn to warm up the voice correctly

    ·      Perform at various events, concerts and community events

     

    6th grade Intermediate Band (MYP Year 1B Music)

    Students should have one year of playing experience on their band or string instrument. Students are learning to play in an ensemble and learning to work in a group to produce a common goal. Students will continue to refine the following skills:

    ·      Students should be able to sight read at a grade 1 level

    ·      Perform between a grade 1-2 level.

    ·      Bb, Eb concert scale and Chromatic scale.

    ·      Students are required to participate in two formal concerts.

     

     

    7th/8th grade Intermediate Band (MYP Year 2 Music)

    Students should have one year of playing experience on their band or string instrument. Students continue to learn to play in an ensemble and learning to work in a group to produce a common goal. Some students will be invited to audition for local and regional Honor Bands. Student will continue to refine the following skills:

    ·      Learn  E Major, A Major, D Major, G Major, C Major, F Major,  Bb Major, Eb Major, and Ab Major Scales

    ·      Chromatic Scale full comfortable range of instrument

    ·      Learn to play in various time signatures: 2/4, 4/4, 2/2, 3/4, 6/8

    ·      To be familiar with syncopation and irregular rhythms

    ·      To be able to sight-read at grade 1 ½  level with accuracy.

    ·      To be able to perform music at a grade 2 level.

    ·      Begin ear training

    ·      Students are required to participate in two formal concerts.

     

     

    7th/8th grade Intermediate Strings (MYP Year 2 Music)

    Students should have one year of playing experience on their string instrument. Students are learning to play in an ensemble and learning to work in a group to produce a common goal. Students will continue to work in All for Strings book 2 and 3.

    ·      Learn  E Major, A Major, D Major, G Major, C Major, F Major,  Bb Major, Eb Major, and Ab Major Scales

    ·      Chromatic Scale full comfortable range of instrument

    ·      Learn to play in various time signatures: 2/4, 4/4, 2/2, 3/4, 6/8

    ·      To be able to sight-read at grade 1 ½  level with accuracy

    ·      Be able to perform chamber music

    ·      Students are required to participate in two formal concerts.

     

    Advanced Band (MYP Year 3 Music) Currently 0 Period

    The Advanced Band is 0 period and is open to any student playing a band instrument who meets the minimum requirements (Completing MYP year 2.and/or can play up to 4 # and 4b, chromatic scale full range of instrument, play a variety of irregular rhythms and complex meters) Seventh and Sixth graders must have teacher’s permission to participate in this high achieving group. Students are expected to audition for various honor bands.

    ·      Know all 12 major scales

    ·      Know Chromatic Scale full comfortable range of instrument

    ·      Learn and solidify playing in various time signatures: 2/4, 4/4, 2/2, 3/4, 6/8, 9/8, 12/8

    ·      To be familiar with syncopation and irregular rhythms

    ·      To be able to sight-read at grade 2 level with accuracy

    ·      Students are able to perform early high school level music with musical accuracy.

    ·      Be able to perform chamber music

    ·      Students are required to participate in two formal concerts, Perform the National Anthem by memory at the River Cats Game.

    ·      Students begin ear training and are able to repeat the first 5 notes of F, Bb, and Eb

     

    Jazz Band (MYP Year 3 Music)

    Students must be enrolled 0 period or Intermediate band to participate in this performing group. Students are introduced to various Jazz styles and smaller ensemble playing.  Students are expected to participate in the Wayne Reimer’s Jazz Festival in January, two formal concert, and Open House. The Jazz Band might be used for a tour to recruit potential band students at local elementary schools. Students are expected to learn and know the following.

    ·      All 12 major scales

    ·      The blues scales

    ·      Beginning improvisation

    ·      Basic ear training

    ·      Basic knowledge of various styles in jazz

    ·      Be able to read charts a t a grade 2 level.
