Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about volunteering. Click here
for further information.
What do I need to become a SJUSD volunteer?
If you would like to volunteer, complete a Volunteer Information form
and hand it into your local school office. At that time, they will give you the volunteer information for that school site and, if required, they will give you a Fingerprint Authorization Form.
All volunteers who work directly with children away from staff or who drive/accompany students on field trips must be fingerprinted in order to conduct a background check from the Department of Justice.
Where can I be fingerprinted?
All fingerprinting must be done at the SJUSD Human Resources office. By Appointment Only. Call (916) 971-7788 for an appointment.
The school secretary will provide you with a signed Fingerprint Authorization Form. You will need to bring this form as well as a valid, unexpired photo identification (such as a Driver License) to Human Resources in order to be fingerprinted.
How long will it take to receive the results of my background check?
It may take up to 30 days before Human Resources receives clearance from the Department of Justice, so be sure to plan ahead for a field trip or class event!
Who can I call to find out if I have been cleared to volunteer?
You should contact the school secretary to find out if you have been cleared to volunteer. The Department of Justice process can take 30 days or more to notify the District, so don't wait until the last minute.
What if I don't receive clearance before a field trip or class event?
If SJUSD has not received clearance by the time the field trip/event occurs, you will not be able to volunteer for that field trip/event. You may accompany or drive your own child to the field trip, but you will not be able to drive or supervise other students.
Once I've been approved, what are the rules for volunteers?
