COVID-19 Quarantine & Isolation
-
The information on this page has been drafted to help bring greater understanding to quarantine and isolation periods. It reflects the latest guidance to be implemented by the district. This page is for informational purposes only. Return dates are assigned by schools based on individual circumstances.
San Juan Unified applies quarantine and isolation recommendations as approved by state and local health authorities. Each individual case involving exposure to COVID-19 or a confirmed case of COVID-19 is evaluated based on its individual circumstances and the ability to return to school or work may vary. This page describes the general guidelines currently in use, but individual cases may vary.

Individuals with Symptoms
Everyone must screen for symptoms daily…
- Watch for signs of fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, chills, body aches or other concerns.
- Stay home if ill and report absence to school or work.
- Students and staff may not return to in-person instruction or work until they have met the following criteria defined by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH):
- At least 24 hours have passed since having a fever without the use of fever reducing medications; AND
- Other symptoms have improved; AND
- They have a negative test for COVID-19; OR provide healthcare professional's documentation that symptoms are typical of an underlying chronic condition or an alternative diagnosis; OR at least 10 days have passed since symptom onset.

Positive Test Result or COVID-19 Diagnosis
If a student/staff member tests positive or is diagnosed with COVID-19…
- They must isolate at home and do not go to school or work for any reason.
- They must remain in isolation for at least five days.
- On or after Day 5 of isolation they can test for COVID-19 if any symptoms they have are improving or have resolved. If the result is negative they can end their isolation the day after testing. (Students are strongly encouraged to wear a face covering until after day 10 if eligible to return before then. Employees who are eligible to return before day 10 MUST wear a face covering in accordance with Cal/OSHA requirements.)
- If they test positive on or after Day 5, they must remain in isolation through Day 10 and may not return until Day 11 and only if their symptoms have improved or resolved.
- Staff members will be notified when there is a positive case at their worksite. Families will be notified when a positive case is reported in their student’s class or activity.

Exposure to Someone with COVID-19
An individual is considered exposed if they are within six feet for a total of 15 minutes or more in a single 24-hour period of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
Exposed individuals (both students and staff and regardless of vaccination status or where the exposure occurs) may attend school or work and participate in activities as long as they remain asymptomatic and are closely monitored or self-monitored for any symptoms to develop. Exposed individuals should:
- Get tested for COVID-19 three to five days after their last exposure
- Strongly consider wearing a face covering for 10 days especially in indoor settings and when near those at a higher risk for severe COVID-19 disease
- Consider getting the COVID-19 vaccination if they have not already
Exposed individuals MUST:
- Stay home if they become symptomatic. Any exposed individual experiencing symptoms should follow guidance for symptomatic persons.
- Follow all isolation requirements if they test positive for COVID-19.
